What exactly does the calculator calculate?

Why is it worth calculating weight with GSM?
Grammage (gsm) isg/m²- one of the most reliable paper parameters. A manufacturer may quote a "typical thickness", but in practice it is influenced by humidity, coating, compression and even production batch. The grammage weight is usually closest to the truth, which is why it works well in quotes and shipment planning.

How to use the paper weight calculator?

How does it work? (formulas in human language)
1) Area of sheet: convert mm → meters and multiply the sides. Example: A4 (210 × 297 mm) is approx. 0.210 m × 0.297 m ≈0.062 m².
2) Weight of one sheet: area (m²) × grammage (g/m²) = weight in grams. A4 80 gsm: 0.062 × 80 ≈~5 gper sheet (very good reference point).
3) Weight of circulation: sheet weight × number of sheets. The result is displayed in g or kg (depending on the value).
4) Stack thickness (estimate): paper differs in "density", therefore offset/chalk/cardboard have different conversion factors. This is an approximation to packaging and storage - not to calculating the spine of a book down to 0.1 mm.

Example #1: "How much does 100 sheets of A4 80 gsm weigh?"
A4 is approx. 0.062 m². At 80 g/m² this gives ~5 g per sheet.100 sheets ofis approximately~500 g. This is why a classic A4 ream of 80 gsm (500 sheets) usually weighs approximately2.5 kg(plus packaging).
If you are preparing to send documents, this "benchmark" makes your life much easier: 200 sheets of A4 80 gsm is usually about 1 kg of paper alone.
Example #2: "Catalog 64 pages, A4, 170 gsm"
64 pages in simple conversion is 32 sheets. A4 ~0.062 m², so one sheet of 170 gsm weighs approximately 10.5 g. 32 sheets is ~336 g per copy (paper only). With 200 copies, ~67 kg of paper is made, which becomes important in transport and storage.
In practice, printing also involves technological waste - it is worth adding a buffer, especially in the case of large quantities.
Common mistakes (that cost time and money)
Confusing "pages" with "sheets"
A page is what the reader sees. A sheet is a physical piece of paper. In the simplest variant:2 pages = 1 sheet. If you enter pages, the calculator will convert them to sheets automatically.
Assuming that larger packaging = cheaper to transport
Higher grammage paper can quickly reach couriers' weight thresholds. Sometimes it is more profitable to split the shipment into parcels or change the weight if possible.
Treating thickness as a "certain" value
Chalk may be denser, cardboard may be fluffier - therefore the thickness is an estimate. It is perfect for packaging and storage, but it is better to use the manufacturer's data to design the spine of the book.
No packing buffer
The calculator counts paper. Add packaging, dividers and protection to the actual package. Depending on the format, it is usually +5–20% of the weight.
FAQ - frequently asked questions
Can I count non-standard paper size?
Yes. Select presetCustom size (mm)and enter the width and height. The calculator will calculate the area and weight in the same way as for A0–A6 or Letter formats.
Where does the "ream weight" in the calculator come from?
A ream is normally500 sheets of. The calculator takes the weight of 1 sheet and multiplies × 500, so you can quickly compare how changing the grammage affects the weight of your paper order.
Why does the thickness depend on the paper type?
Different papers have different densities and production methods. Coated paper is usually "clunky" and may be thinner for the same grammage. Cardboard and stiff papers often have a larger volume. In the calculator, the choice of paper type affects the estimate of stack thickness.
Will the calculator calculate the cost of paper?
Yes - if you enter the price per 1 kg, you will getestimated raw material costfor the batch. Remember that this is not the cost of printing (ink, labor, waste), but the paper itself.
