Smoothing walls is one of the most important stages of finishing works in construction. It allows you to obtain a perfectly smooth surface, which is an excellent base for painting or wallpapering. Accurate calculation of the need for putty is the key to efficient and economical renovation. Too little material means the need for additional visits to the construction store and delays, while too much material means unnecessary costs. Consumption of putty per m² - standards for various types of products
The demand for putty depends primarily on the type of product selected, the thickness of the applied layer and the technical condition of the substrate. There are several main types of plaster on the construction market with different performance parameters:
- Gypsum plaster (loose, in bags):A traditional material that requires mixing with water. The standard dry mix consumption is approximately1.0 kg to 1.2 kg per 1 m²with a layer thickness of 1 mm. It is characterized by a thicker application layer and is often used on cement-lime plasters to compensate for larger defects.
- Polymer plaster (ready-made, in buckets):Modern plaster based on acrylic binders or other polymers. It is ready for use immediately after opening. Consumption is usually from1.2 kg to 1.5 kg per 1 m²for a layer thickness of 1 mm. The polymer finish is very flexible, easy to apply and sand, dedicated to thin finishing layers.
- Cement or cement-lime plaster:It is highly resistant to moisture, which is why it is mainly used in bathrooms, basements and on facades. Consumption is on average1.4 kg to 1.8 kg per 1 m²for every 1 mm of thickness.
How to calculate the amount of plaster yourself? Practical formula
To determine the total need for plaster, use a simple mathematical formula:
1. Calculation of the area of walls and ceiling (A):
Multiply the length of each wall by its height, and then sum the results. Subtract the area of door and window openings. If you plan to putty the ceiling as well, add its area (length multiplied by the width of the room).
2. Taking into account the number of layers (n) and thickness (g):
Usually, 2 layers of plaster are applied to obtain a satisfactory effect. The total thickness is most often about 1.5 mm to 2 mm.
3. Formula for the total weight of the dry material or finished mass (M):
M = A * z * g * 1.1
Where:
- Ais the surface to be finished in m²,
- zis the consumption given by the manufacturer (e.g. 1.2 kg/m² per 1 mm),
- gis the total thickness of the layers in millimeters (e.g. 1.5 mm),
- 1.1is a safety factor meaning 10% reserve for losses, lapping of corners, corrections and residues remaining on the tools and in the packaging.

The condition and type of the substrate have a decisive influence on the amount of material used. New walls made of plasterboard require much less plaster than old, rough cement-lime plaster. The table below shows approximate consumption values:

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How much plaster do I need for 100 m² of walls?
Assuming an average consumption of 2 kg per 1 m² (two standard layers of approx. 1 mm thick each, including the reserve), you will need approximately 200 kg of plaster to smooth 100 m² of walls. In the case of 20 kg bags of loose plaster, this translates into 10 bags. With ready-made buckets of 18 kg, this will be approximately 11 buckets.
Should I subtract windows and doors for the plaster calculator?
Yes, from the point of view of saving material, it is worth subtracting large window and door openings (e.g. balcony doors, garage doors). In the case of smaller, single windows or standard door openings, they can not be subtracted - the unused material will serve as a natural reserve for gaps and finishing of recesses (glyphs), which consume a lot of plaster and require precise profiling with corners.
What is the difference between filling and smoothing?
Filling is a preliminary process that involves filling in larger defects, masking cracks, grouting plasterboards and deriving the geometry of the walls using harder plaster fillers. Smoothing is the final (finishing) stage, during which a thin layer of fine-grained plaster (often polymer) is applied to obtain a velvety smoothness under the paint.
How much plaster do we lose during sanding?
During manual or mechanical sanding, from 5% to even 15% of the applied mass is removed - it depends on the precision of application. The more carefully and evenly you apply the finish (e.g. using a dust-free technique), the less dust will be created during sanding and the less material loss will be.
How many layers of plaster should be applied to machine plaster?
On gypsum machine plasters, two thin layers of finishing coat are usually enough. In the case of traditional cement-lime plasters, which have a porous and rough structure, it is recommended to first apply one starting layer (e.g. gypsum filler), and only after it has dried and leveled, one or two layers of finishing coat.
