What is the normal menstrual cycle in a woman and what are its phases?

The menstrual (menstrual) cycle is a series of regularly recurring changes in a woman's body that occur under the influence of hormones, preparing the body for possible fertilization and pregnancy. The average cycle duration is 28 days, but cycles lasting from 21 to 35 days are considered fully normal. The cycle begins on the first day of menstrual bleeding (the menstrual phase) and is divided into several key stages. The first is the follicular phase, during which, under the influence of the FSH hormone, the Graafian follicles containing egg cells mature in the ovaries, and the uterine mucosa thickens. The next, shortest stage is ovulation (ovulation), when the follicle bursts, releasing the mature egg into the fallopian tube. The last stage is the luteal phase, dominated by progesterone, preparing the uterus to receive the embryo. If fertilization does not occur, hormone levels drop rapidly, the mucous membrane sheds and the cycle begins again.

Fertile days and ovulation - how to precisely determine the time of peak fertility?

Fertile days are the period in a woman's menstrual cycle when unprotected intercourse gives the greatest chance of getting pregnant. Even though the egg cell after being released from the ovary lives only for about 12 to 24 hours, the so-called the fertile window lasts longer - usually about 6 days. This is due to the fact that male sperm are able to survive in the female reproductive tract under favorable conditions (due to the presence of fertile mucus) from 3 to even 5 days, waiting for the egg to be released. The ovulation process itself usually occurs exactly 14 days before the planned start of the next menstrual period (regardless of the total length of the cycle). This means that in a regular 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14, but in a 32-day cycle, it will occur around day 18. Fertile days usually include 3-5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation and the day after it.
