Speed (symbol: v, from the Latin wordvelocitas) is a vector physical quantity describing the rate of change of the body's position in time in relation to a specific reference frame. In classical physics, speed is defined as the ratio of the distance traveled to the time taken to cover this distance. It is very important to distinguish two concepts: instantaneous speed (speed in a given, infinitely short moment of time, indicated by e.g. a car speedometer) and average speed (total distance divided by total movement time). The basic unit of speed in the International System of Units (SI) is meters per second (m/s), but in everyday life the most commonly used is kilometers per hour (km/h).

The formula for velocity in uniform straight-line motion
In the simplest case - i.e. in uniform straight-line motion, in which the body moves in a straight line with constant speed - the formula for velocity (v) has the form:
v = s / t
where:
- vis the velocity,
- sis the distance traveled,
- tis the movement time.
For the calculations to produce the correct result, the units must be consistent. For example, if the distance is given in kilometers (km), the time must be expressed in hours (h), which will give the result in kilometers per hour (km/h).
Speed unit converter: m/s to km/h
In physics, there is often a need to convert meters per second to kilometers per hour and vice versa. This relationship is based on a simple multiplier:
1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
1 km/h ≈ 0.2778 m/s(i.e. 1 / 3.6)
To convert m/s to km/h, multiply the value by 3.6. To convert km/h to m/s, divide the value by 3.6.
