Gravel Calculatorcalculates the amount of gravel (in cubic meters and tons) needed to fill a walkway, driveway, parking lot or garden. Enter the surface dimensions and layer thickness - the calculator will calculate for you.
How to calculate the amount of gravel?
Basic formula: Volume (m³) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Layer thickness (m). Then: Mass (t) = Volume (m³) × Gravel density (t/m³). Typical gravel density: 1.4–1.6 t/m³ (in a loose state). Example: alley 10 m × 1.5 m × 0.1 m (10 cm thick) = 1.5 m³ × 1.5 t/m³ = 2.25 tons of gravel.
Recommended gravel layer thicknesses
Pedestrian paths- 5–8 cm of decorative gravel per 5–10 cm of subgrade (sand or wedge).Car driveways- minimum 10–15 cm of gravel of 8–16 mm or 16–32 mm fraction per 10–15 cm of crushed stone base.Truck parking- 20-25 cm of crushed aggregate.Recreational places— 5–10 cm of decorative gravel (pebble, granite grit).Drains and drainage— 20–40 cm of washed gravel, fraction 8–16 mm or 16–32 mm.
Types of gravel and their uses
Washed gravel (mine)- natural, round grains, aesthetic, ideal for alleys, gardens and play areas. Fractions: 2–8, 8–16, 16–32 mm.Kliniec (crushed aggregate)- with sharp edges, better stabilization, ideal for bases of driveways and access roads.Granite grit- decorative, durable, available in various colors (gray, white, black, pink).River pebble- decorative, round stones 2-10 cm, for Japanese gardens and flower beds.
Where to order gravel?
Gravel can be ordered from: mines and aggregate production plants (lowest prices, sold by weight), construction warehouses (convenient delivery, higher prices), gardening and construction stores (25-50 kg bags, more expensive, but without minimums). For orders over 5 tons, it is usually cost-effective to transport it by truck with a tipper directly from the mine.
Frequently asked questions
How much gravel do I need for a 3×6 m driveway, 10 cm thick?
Volume = 3 m × 6 m × 0.10 m = 1.8 m³. Weight = 1.8 m³ × 1.5 t/m³ = 2.7 tons of gravel. For this you need a foundation: 5–10 cm of sand, i.e. approx. 0.9–1.8 m³ of sand. Order with a 10-15% allowance to compensate for unevenness: approx. 3 tons of gravel and 1.2 tons of sand.
What fraction of gravel is best for a garden alley?
Gravel of 8-16 mm size or pebble 8-32 mm is best for garden alleys. The 2-8 mm fraction is too fine (it gets undone when walking and gets into shoes). The 32+ mm fraction is uncomfortable to walk on. 8-16 mm is the golden mean: stable, aesthetic and comfortable to walk on. For better stability, consider gravel with a wedge.
Should I put gardening cloth under the gravel?
Geotextile (horticultural fabric) under the gravel prevents weeds from growing through and the gravel from mixing with the ground. It is recommended for decorative gravel, especially in gardens. Under driveways and roads - not necessarily, because it permeates water worse than sand and may make compaction more difficult. Use geogrid to reinforce the subgrade for road gravel.
How to harden a gravel surface?
Standard gravel migrates when driving a car. Solutions: KORO/Ecoraster system (plastic grids stabilizing the gravel), gravel stabilizer (resin that binds the grains together to create a permeable surface), the use of flat gravel instead of smooth gravel (it stabilizes better), regular refreshment and compaction with a roller. Ecoraster grates are the most popular solution for driveways.
How much does a ton of gravel cost in Poland?
Gravel prices (2024): washed gravel 8–16 mm - approx. PLN 50–90/t in the mine. With delivery to the property: PLN 100-180/t depending on the distance and region. Decorative granite grit: PLN 150–350/t. River pebble: PLN 200–400/t. The minimum delivery is usually 3-5 tons. Prices vary greatly regionally - gravel is heavy and transportation is a large part of the price.
