Factors affecting the weight of round wood - species and degree of humidity
Determining the actual weight of a wood log without using an on-ramp scale is a big challenge, because wood is a natural material with a very variable structure. The two most important factors determining the weight of a log are the tree species and humidity. Deciduous species such as oak, beech and hornbeam are characterized by very dense grain and thick cellular structure, which makes them much heavier than coniferous species such as pine, spruce or fir, even with identical external dimensions of the log.
The moisture content of wood has an even greater impact on its weight. Freshly cut wood (so-called green wood) contains huge amounts of water, which may constitute more than half of the total weight of the log. As it is stored and dried (seasoned), the water evaporates, which leads to a drastic reduction in the weight of the raw material - the weight of a square meter of wood can drop by up to forty percent. How to correctly measure a log and use the wood weight calculator?
To obtain a result as close to reality as possible, it is crucial to measure the log correctly. The length of the log should be measured along its longitudinal axis, disregarding any processing allowances. The diameter of the log - due to the natural convergence of the trunk (the tree is narrower at the top and wider at the base) - should be measured exactly in half of its length. The measurement is taken under the bark (or taking into account the thickness of the bark by subtracting the appropriate allowance).
After taking the measurements, enter the length of the log in meters and the diameter in centimeters into the appropriate fields of our calculator. Then select the tree species (e.g. pine, oak, birch, spruce) and humidity level. The algorithm will calculate the volume of the log in cubic meters (cubic) in a fraction of a second based on Huber's formula, and then multiply it by the specific density of the selected wood, presenting the final mass result in kilograms.

Why does the weight of an oak log differ from a pine log of the same dimensions?
This is due to the difference in the density of the wood. Oak is a hard deciduous wood with a fresh density of approximately 950 kg/m³, while pine is a soft coniferous wood with a fresh density of approximately 750 kg/m³.
Does the calculator take into account the weight of tree bark?
The calculator makes calculations based on the average density of roundwood with bark. If you measure the diameter without bark, the actual weight may be slightly lower than the calculated one.
How does air humidity affect stored logs?
Wood is a hygroscopic material, which means that it adapts its humidity to the surroundings. Logs stored outdoors dry, losing weight, but can re-absorb moisture on rainy days.
