The screed calculator is a practical online construction tool, created for people planning to renovate or finish floors. Correctly estimating the demand for a screed - regardless of whether it is a self-leveling cement mass, anhydrite mass or a traditional concrete screed - can be problematic. Underestimating the amount of material forces the work to be interrupted during pouring (which may spoil the final effect and weaken the floor structure) and generates additional costs of subsequent transport. Excess material, in turn, means unnecessary expense and trouble with the disposal of heavy bags.

How to calculate the demand for a screed? Formula and parameters
Four basic parameters are needed to perform the calculations:
- Floor area (m²):Length multiplied by the width of the room.
- Layer thickness (mm):Planned screed thickness. Remember that in the case of highly uneven surfaces, medium thickness should be used.
- Average consumption (kg/m²/mm):This value determines how many kilograms of dry mix are needed to cover 1 m² of surface with a 1 mm thick layer. You will find it on the product packaging.
- Bag size (kg):Standard weight of a single package (usually 20 kg, 25 kg or 30 kg).
The basic mathematical formula used for calculations is:
Amount of dry mix (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (mm) × Consumption (kg/m²/mm)
We then divide the obtained result by the capacity of the bag and round it up to find out the number of packages to buy.
Screed allowance for losses – why is it worth adding 8-10%?
In theory, the surface is perfectly even and the screed only hits the floor. In construction practice, you should always add a safety margin for losses (slack). This is due to several factors:
- Ground unevenness:Old ceilings and lean concrete are rarely perfectly horizontal. The screed will naturally be thicker in recesses, which will increase wear and tear.
- Losses in vessels and tools:Some of the mortar always settles on the walls of the bucket, mixer or construction cassette.
- Perimeter expansion joints:A small part of the liquid mass may penetrate into the expansion joints near the walls.
Standard recommended stock is **8% to 10%**. In the case of very uneven floors without prior leveling, it is safer to use even 12-15% of the reserve.

How to calculate how many bags of self-leveling screed are needed for 20 m²?
Assuming a screed thickness of 5 mm and a typical consumption of 1.6 kg/m²/mm, the calculations are as follows: 20 m² × 5 mm × 1.6 kg = 160 kg of dry mix. Adding 8% of the stock (160 × 1.08 = 172.8 kg) and dividing it by a 25 kg bag (172.8 / 25 = 6.91), we get the result: you need to purchase 7 bags of screed.
What is the minimum thickness of the self-leveling screed?
The minimum thickness depends on the specific product and manufacturer's recommendations. As a rule, thin-layer screeds can be used from a thickness of 2 mm. Attempting to pour too thin a layer on an unprimed substrate may lead to scalding, cracking and detachment from the substrate.
How long does the self-leveling screed dry before laying tiles?
The drying time depends on the temperature, air humidity and layer thickness. Quick-drying screeds allow for foot traffic after just 2-4 hours, and laying ceramic tiles is often possible after 24-48 hours. In the case of laminated panels or parquets, wait longer (often up to 7-14 days) and check the residual humidity of the substrate with a hygrometer (humidity should not exceed 2% for cement and 0.5% for anhydrite).
Is soil necessary for the self-leveling screed?
Yes, priming the substrate is absolutely necessary. The primer evens out the absorbency of the substrate, prevents water from being removed from the screed too quickly (which would weaken its parameters), increases adhesion and prevents the formation of air bubbles on the surface of the screed.
What does the wear factor on the bag mean?
This coefficient (e.g. 1.6 kg/m²/mm) means that to cover 1 square meter of floor with a layer 1 millimeter thick, you will use 1.6 kg of dry powder. If you pour a layer of 10 mm (1 cm), you will use ten times more for each square meter, i.e. 16 kg of material.
