When you see "27 inches" or "55 inches" in the store, it is easy to get confused about how big the screenis in practice. The diagonal sounds specific, but it does not say directly how many centimeters the monitor is wide, how high the matrix is, whether it will fit on a desk, or whether the fonts will be legible. How does the screen size calculator work?
The calculator uses simple geometry. You have a diagonal ofD(in inches) and an aspect ratio ofW:H(e.g. 16:9). From this we calculate the width and height, because the diagonal is the hypotenuse of the triangle with sides corresponding to the dimensions of the screen. To put it simply:
- First, the calculator converts the proportions into a "common" value (e.g. 16 and 9) and calculates their "hypotense".
- Then calculates the width and height in inches, and then converts to cm and mm (1 inch = 2.54 cm).
- If you enter the resolution, the calculator calculates the diagonal in pixels and divides by the diagonal in inches to get the PPI.
- Based on PPI, it calculates pixel pitch (mm per pixel) and the suggested distance at which individual pixels are difficult to see.
Diagonal vs actual width and height - why is it confusing?
Two matrices with the same diagonal may have different dimensions if they have different aspect ratios. Example: 34" ultrawide 21:9 is definitely wider than 34" in 16:9, but it is not equally "tall". Therefore, when choosing a monitor for your desk, the following is much more important than the diagonal itself:
Width
This is crucial if you have limited space on your desk or want to fit the monitor between speakers, a lamp and a stand. The width also determines the comfort of multi-window work.
- Check the width in cm - whether there is room for the keyboard, notebook and pad.
- Make sure the arm/stand doesn't eat up space at the back of the desk.
Height
Important for ergonomics: the top edge of the screen should usually be at eye level or slightly below. A screen that is too high at a short distance may cause neck strain.
- The height in cm will help you choose a VESA mount or stand.
- Ultrawide is usually easier to fit the screen vertically.
PPI, pixel pitch and megapixels – what is worth understanding before purchasing?
If you fill in the resolution in the calculator, you will get several metrics. Each one says something different:

In practice, PPI helps answer the question:is this resolution "just right" for this diagonal?27" in 1080p will have significantly larger pixels than 27" in 1440p, and 27" in 4K will give extreme sharpness, but may require scaling the interface (so that the text is not microscopic).
Aspect ratio: 16:9, 21:9, 32:9 and others - when do they make sense?
The calculator also shows the name of the aspect ratio (e.g. widescreen, ultrawide). Below is a quick guide:
Most universal: games, movies, office work. Easiest compatibility
Ultrawide: great for dual-window work and gaming immersion diagonal.
Super ultrawide: like two monitors next to each other. Great for multitasking, but requires space on the desk.
The choice of aspect ratio affects the "impression of size". 34" 21:9 often replaces a set of two smaller screens, but not everyone is suitable for documents (vertical) or working with a lot of text. On the other hand, 16:10 is liked in laptops and office work because it offers more height for content.
Recommended viewing distance (Retina limit) - what does it mean?
In the results you can see the suggested viewing distance range (e.g. 55-80 cm). This is an approximation of the distance at which individual pixels are difficult to distinguish for most people. The calculator calculates this value based on the pixel pitch and the assumption of typical visual acuity
- If you sit closer than the minimum distance - you may start to see a "grid" or jagged edges.
- If you are sitting much further away - high resolution gives less benefits, because the eye will not "catch" details anyway.
- For a TV in the living room, the distance is usually greater, so a higher resolution (4K) makes sense with larger diagonals.

Frequently asked questions
Is 27" 1440p the "golden mean"?
For many people, yes, because it gives clearly greater sharpness than 1080p at 27", and at the same time often does not require aggressive interface scaling like 4K. The PPI calculator will help you assess whether this fits your distance from the screen.
What is the difference between UWQHD and QHD?
This is effectively a "wide" variant of 1440p. QHD (2560×1440) is standard 16:9, and UWQHD (e.g. 3440×1440) is ultrawide 21:9 - similar pixel height, but larger width and more working space.
Why doesn't PPI count when I don't specify resolution?
PPI depends on the number of pixels and screen size. The diagonal and aspect ratio alone do not tell us how many pixels the matrix has. Therefore, resolution is needed to calculate pixel density and pixel pitch.
Does the calculator take monitor/TV frames into account?
No – counts the dimensions of the active matrix. The frames and casing are model specific, so they may add a few mm to the device's external dimensions.
