How the calculator works
The calculator uses a simple relationship: the amount of pure alcohol is the volume of the drink multiplied by the percentage of alcohol. Example: 500 ml of beer with a strength of 5% contains 25 ml of pure ethanol. Converted into grams, it is about 20 g of alcohol.
If you add water or another soft drink, the concentration decreases, but the amount of ethanol remains the same. This allows you to see how the alcohol percentage changes after dilution.
Calculation examples
Beer 500 ml, 5%
Such a drink contains about 20 g of pure ethanol. This is the equivalent of one standard drink according to WHO standards.
Wine 150 ml, 12%
A glass of wine provides approximately 14 g of ethanol. That's about the same as a small bottle of beer.
Vodka 40 ml, 40%
A small glass of vodka contains approximately 13 g of ethanol. Although the volume is small, the amount of alcohol is comparable to beer or wine.

Ethanol calculator and alcohol density – % by volume or % by weight?
In order for the ethanol calculator to correctly count grams of pure alcohol, it must take into accountthe density of ethanol: at a temperature of 20°C it is approximately0.789 g/ml- ethanol is clearly lighter than water. Hence the key difference between the two methods of administering concentration.% vol. (% vol, ABV)tells you how many milliliters of pure ethanol are in 100 ml of the drink - this is how all alcohols are marked on the labels.wt.% (% m/m)tells how many grams of ethanol per 100 g of solution - this measurement is used by laboratories and industry. Since ethanol is lighter than water, the weight percentage is always lower: vodka 40% vol. has only approx. 33.3% by weight.
Conversion example: 500 ml of beer 5% vol. contains 25 ml of pure ethanol, i.e. 25 · 0.789 ≈19.7 g of alcohol- it is this number (and not milliliters) that is the basis for the so-called standard portion (10 g) used in health recommendations and permille calculations.
Alcoholometric tables - density of water-ethanol solution
The relationship between concentration and density is not linear (due to volume contraction during mixing), which is why alcoholometric tables are used in practice. Approximate values for 20°C:

The alcohol meter (Tralles hydrometer) is based on the same tables: it measures the density of the liquid and converts it to % by volume. Therefore, the measurement is reliable only in a pure water-alcoholic solution with a temperature close to 20°C - sugar or fruit extract will distort the density and, consequently, the concentration reading.
