What is a unit of alcohol?
Standard unit of alcohol (AU) is a conventional measure used by health organizations to set safe drinking limits. In Poland, one unit of alcohol is 10 grams of pure ethanol. This corresponds approximately to: a glass (250 ml) of beer 5%, a glass (100 ml) of wine 12-13%, a portion (25-30 ml) of vodka or strong alcohol 40%.
How to calculate the amount of alcohol?
Formula to calculate grams of alcohol in a drink:Alcohol (g) = Volume (ml) × Concentration (%) / 100 × 0.789(density of ethanol). Example: beer 500 ml, 5% = 500 × 0.05 × 0.789 = 19.7 g of alcohol = approximately 2 units of alcohol. The calculator performs these calculations automatically for different drinks and their volumes.
Safe alcohol consumption limits
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Polish health guidelines: women should not exceed 14 units of alcohol per week (2 units per day), men - 21 units per week (3 units per day). These are the limits of "low-risk drinking", not safety standards - the WHO emphasizes thatno level of alcohol consumption is completely safe. Drinking above these limits significantly increases the risk of cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular disease and addiction.
Promille calculator - how does it work?
The approximate blood alcohol level (per mille) can be calculated by Widmark's formula: BAC = (Alcohol g / (Weight kg × r)) − (t × 0.15), where r = 0.7 for men, 0.6 for women; t = hours from the start of drinking. This is an approximation - actual levels depend on metabolism, food intake, medications, and many other factors. The calculator provides approximate values and does not replace a breathalyzer.

How many grams of alcohol does one 500 ml 5% beer contain?
500 ml beer with 5% alcohol content contains: 500 × 0.05 × 0.789 = approx. 19.7 g of pure ethanol, which corresponds to approx. 2 units of alcohol. Remember that craft beers can be 6-10% alcohol and contain proportionately more ethanol.
How long does it take for alcohol to be metabolized by the body?
The body metabolizes alcohol at a constant rate of approximately 0.1–0.15 per mille per hour (in a healthy person). This corresponds to approximately 7-10 g of alcohol per hour. You can't speed up the process with coffee, a cold shower, or anything else - only time allows you to sober up.
How does a unit of alcohol differ in Poland from other countries?
The definition of an alcohol unit varies between countries: Poland and Germany - 10 g of ethanol; Great Britain - 8 g; USA and Canada - 14 g (drink); Australia - 10 g. When comparing health recommendations from different countries, always check how many grams are in that unit.
Can the BAC calculator be used to assess driving ability?
No - the calculator only provides rough estimates based on a mathematical formula. The actual level of alcohol in the blood depends on many factors that cannot be taken into account in the calculator. The only reliable method is a breathalyzer or a blood test. Never drive after drinking alcohol.
How long does it take to get sober after 2 beers?
2 beers 500 ml 5% = approx. 4 units of alcohol = approx. 40 g of ethanol. With a metabolism of approximately 0.15 per mille/h, it takes approximately 5-6 hours to eliminate this amount of alcohol. But the actual time depends on weight, gender, food, fatigue and metabolism. Always assume a margin of safety.
