Other tools you may find usefulGST Calculator - Precise and instant online tax calculation
The GST Calculator is an irreplaceable tool for every entrepreneur, freelancer and consumer moving in the world of international trade and services. Goods and Services Tax (GST), which is the equivalent of the European VAT, operates in many countries around the world, including India, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Correctly calculating net and gross value and determining the exact amount of tax due can be a challenge due to varying regional rates and specific tax regulations. Our intuitive calculator allows you to perform the necessary calculations in just a few seconds, eliminating the risk of costly accounting errors and facilitating everyday budget planning and issuing invoices to foreign contractors.
What is GST and where is it applied?
GST, or Goods and Services Tax, is a general value-added sales tax levied on most goods and services intended for domestic consumption. From an economic perspective, it works in a similar way to VAT in the European Union - it is paid at every stage of the supply chain, but the final financial burden rests with the final consumer. This tax has been introduced in many jurisdictions to simplify the tax structure. In India, for example, the 2017 GST reform replaced over a dozen different federal and state taxes with a single, coherent system divided into CGST (Central GST), SGST (State GST) and IGST (Integrated GST). In Canada, the system is more complex because in some provinces the GST is combined with the provincial sales tax (PST) to create what is known as the harmonized sales tax (HST). In turn, in Australia and New Zealand, this tax has a more uniform structure, which makes business settlements much easier.
How to calculate GST? Mathematical formulas and examples
Understanding the mathematical basis of GST calculation makes it easier to interpret invoices and plan expenses. There are two basic types of calculations: adding tax to the net price and separating the tax from the gross price. If you know the net price of the goods (excluding tax) and want to calculate the gross price, you use the following formula: the gross price equals the net price multiplied by the sum of one and the tax rate expressed as a decimal fraction. For example, if the rate is 10% and the net price is 100 units, the gross price will be 110 units and the GST amount itself will be 10 units. If you have a gross price and need to extract the tax amount and net value from it, the formula is a bit more complicated: the net price equals the gross price divided by the sum of 1 and the tax rate. You then get the GST amount by subtracting the calculated net price from the gross price. Our calculator performs these operations automatically, saving you time and guaranteeing error-free results in any business scenario.
Key differences between GST and VAT systems
Although the terms GST and VAT are often used interchangeably, there are some administrative and geographical differences between them. VAT (Value Added Tax) dominates in European countries, South America and parts of Africa. GST is standard in countries such as Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand and Singapore. The main difference is the reporting method and rate structure. GST systems are often characterized by fewer reduced rates compared to European VAT, which in theory is intended to simplify tax collection. Moreover, in some countries, such as Canada, GST operates in parallel with local trade taxes, which requires double reporting from entrepreneurs. For Polish companies exporting goods or providing digital services to customers in these areas, understanding these nuances is essential to correctly determine the place of supply of services and avoid double taxation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does GST stand for?
The abbreviation GST comes from the English name Goods and Services Tax, which translated into Polish means Goods and Services Tax. It is a form of indirect tax on added value, collected at every stage of sales.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST in India?
In the Indian tax system, CGST is a central tax that goes to the federal budget, SGST is a state tax that goes to the provincial budget, and IGST is an integrated tax that is levied on transactions between different states and on the import of goods.
How to extract the GST amount from the gross price quoted?
To calculate the tax amount from the gross price, first divide the gross price by 1 plus the tax rate (e.g. by 1.10 for a 10% rate), which will give us the net price. We then subtract the net price from the gross price to obtain the exact GST value.
Does a Polish entrepreneur have to register for GST?
It all depends on the destination country and turnover thresholds. When providing electronic services to consumers in Canada or Australia, there may be an obligation to register for the local GST systems after exceeding certain sales limits.
What is the GST rate in Australia?
Australia has a flat rate GST of 10%. It applies to most goods and services, although some basic foodstuffs, medical services and education are exempt.
