NPS calculator – how to correctly calculate the customer loyalty index?

In today's competitive business world, customer satisfaction and loyalty are key factors determining the stable growth of any company. One of the most popular and most reliable standards for measuring consumer loyalty in the world is the Net Promoter Score (NPS). It is based on one simple but extremely accurate question: "How likely are you to recommend our company/product/service to a friend or colleague?" Customers provide answers on a scale from 0 to 10. Our free online NPS calculator is a simple and precise tool for managers, business owners and customer service departments (Customer Success). It allows you to determine the NPS indicator in a few seconds based on raw survey results, dividing customers into Promoters, Passives and Detractors.

Thanks to this, you will find out whether your brand has a good reputation and what percentage of your customers are active ambassadors supporting business development through word-of-mouth marketing.

Customer division in the Net Promoter Score methodology

The NPS methodology divides respondents into three separate groups depending on the score awarded. Each group is characterized by a different level of involvement and influence on the company's image:

Customer group Rating range (Scale 0-10) Characteristics of behavior and loyalty Impact on the company's image
Promoters Ratings 9 and 10 Loyal, enthusiastic customers who buy regularly and actively recommend the company to others. Positive (active word of mouth marketing, referrals).
Passives Ratings 7 and 8 Satisfied but not very engaged customers. They are susceptible to competition offers. Neutral (they don't recommend, but they don't criticize either).
Critics (Detractors) Ratings from 0 to 6 Dissatisfied customers who may resign from services and spoil the opinion of the brand. Negative (bad opinions online, discouraging others).

How is NPS calculated? Formula and interpretation

Calculating the NPS indicator is mathematically simple, but interpreting the result requires industry context. The formula for NPS is as follows:

$$\text{NPS} = \% \text{ Promoters} - \% \text{ Detractors}$$

This indicator is expressed as an integer in the range from -100 to +100 (no percentage sign is used for the final result). The result is interpreted as follows:

  • NPS below 0:Alarm signal. It means that the company has more detractors than promoters, requiring immediate changes in product quality or service.
  • NPS 0 to 30:Good result. The satisfaction level is decent, but there is great potential for optimization.
  • NPS from 30 to 70:Very good result. The company has a strong loyal customer base and generates high levels of referrals.
  • NPS over 70:Perfect (world class). A standard achieved by the few, most customer-oriented brands (e.g. Apple, Tesla).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Why are customers who rate a company 7 or 8 omitted from the final score?

Passive customers (ratings 7-8) are satisfied with the service, but do not show emotional attachment to the brand. They are willing to switch to a competitor when they offer a lower price. Their omission in the NPS formula is intended to focus the company's attention on extreme groups - those who actively help and those who harm its image.

How often should an NPS survey be performed?

Frequency depends on business model. In the case of B2B relationships, the survey is usually performed 1-2 times a year (so-called relational NPS). In B2C transactions (e.g. e-commerce), the survey can be sent automatically right after finalizing the purchase or delivering the shipment (so-called transactional NPS).

What is the average NPS in the e-commerce industry?

The average NPS varies significantly by industry. In e-commerce, a score above 45 is considered good. In the financial services industry, the average is around 30, while in telecommunications it is often around 10-15. You should always compare yourself to competitors in the same sector.

Does a high NPS guarantee an increase in sales?

The indicator itself does not guarantee growth, but high customer loyalty directly correlates with higher customer lifetime value (CLV), lower churn rate and lower new customer acquisition costs (CAC) thanks to referrals.

How to turn a critic into a promoter?

The key is to contact us quickly after receiving a negative review. Contact the critic, listen to his comments, solve the problem (e.g. by compensating or fixing the error). Customers whose problem has been efficiently solved often become the most loyal brand promoters.
