ROI definition and formula
What is ROI?
ROI (Return on Investment) is an indicator that shows how much the investment has paid off. This indicator informs what percentage of profit (or loss) was generated in relation to the invested capital. The higher the ROI, the more effective the use of funds. In business, ROI is the standard when analyzing the return on advertising campaigns, projects or capital investments.
ROI = ((Profit from investment – Investment cost) / Investment cost) × 100%
- Investment profit– income or cash inflows,
- Investment cost– expenditure incurred on the implementation of the project,
- A positive result means a profit, a negative result – a loss.

Examples of ROI calculations
Example 1. Simple return on investment
Data:Investment cost = PLN 10,000, Profit = PLN 2,500.
ROI = (2,500 / 10,000) × 100% = 25%
The investment brought a 25% return, which means that each zloty generated PLN 1.25 after the project was completed.
Example 2. Marketing project
Data:The advertising campaign cost PLN 5,000 and generated PLN 7,000 in revenue.
ROI = ((7,000 – 5,000) / 5,000) × 100% = 40%
The campaign generated a 40% return, making it profitable. The ROI indicator is crucial here to compare with other marketing activities.
Example 3. Negative ROI
Data:Cost = PLN 15,000, revenue = PLN 12,000.
ROI = ((12,000 – 15,000) / 15,000) × 100% = –20%
The project resulted in a loss of 20%. It is worth analyzing the reasons and considering whether the investment was poorly planned or whether the market environment has changed.
Example 4. ROI in real estate
Data:Purchase of an apartment = PLN 400,000, annual rental income = PLN 28,000.
ROI = (28,000 / 400,000) × 100% = 7%
The return on investment in real estate is 7% per year - a stable result for a low-risk investment.
