The fuel consumption calculator is an extremely useful online tool created for drivers who want to control vehicle operating costs and monitor average fuel consumption (petrol, diesel oil, or LPG). Regular calculation of actual fuel consumption allows for early detection of possible technical faults in the vehicle (e.g. faulty lambda sensor, problems with injectors or blocked brake calipers), which directly translate into an increase in the car's appetite for fuel.
Our calculator, based on the distance traveled in kilometers (km), liters of fuel refueled and the optional price per liter, calculates the average fuel consumption in liters per 100 km (l/100km), the cost of driving 1 km and 100 km, as well as the total expense for the entire trip.
How to calculate actual fuel consumption? The "under the cap" method
The readings of the on-board computer in the car may be inaccurate and may distort the result by 5-10%. The most reliable method of calculating the actual fuel consumption is the full refueling method:
- Refuel the car under the cap at a gas station.
- Reset your car's trip odometer (or save the current odometer reading).
- Ride a specified distance (preferably several hundred kilometers in various conditions).
- Fill up the tank again at the same station (preferably from the same tank) and write down the number of liters refueled and the kilometers traveled from the daily counter.
The mathematical formula used for calculations is:
Average fuel consumption (L/100km) = (Liters consumed / Distance traveled in km) × 100
The impact of driving style on fuel consumption - principles of ecodriving
Implementation of simple principles of economical driving (ecodriving) allows you to reduce fuel consumption in your car by up to 15-20%. The most important rules are:
- Engine braking:Release the gas pedal in advance when approaching traffic lights or intersections. The engine then does not consume fuel.
- Driving smoothness:Avoid sudden acceleration and sharp braking.
- Correct gear:Shift up at approximately 2000 rpm (diesel) or 2200 rpm (petrol).
- Tire pressure:Too low pressure increases rolling resistance and fuel consumption by 3-5%.

How to calculate how much fuel a car consumes per 100 km without a computer?
Divide the number of liters of fuel refueled by the number of kilometers traveled and multiply the result by 100. For example, if you drove 450 km and refueled 27 liters of fuel, the calculation is: (27 / 450) × 100 = 6 liters per 100 km.
How much fuel does a car air conditioning consume?
Running the air conditioning increases fuel consumption by an average of 0.5 to 1.5 liters per 100 km. This increase is most noticeable during city driving in traffic jams and on hot days when the compressor is working at full capacity.
How to calculate the fuel cost for the planned route?
Multiply the planned distance (in hundreds of kilometers) by the average fuel consumption of the car, and multiply the obtained result by the current price of a liter of fuel. For example, a 350 km route in a car that consumes 7 L/100 km at a price of PLN 6.50 is: 3.5 × 7 × 6.50 = PLN 159.25.
Does driving in neutral (idle) save fuel?
No, in modern fuel-injected cars, idling in neutral does not save fuel. The engine running at idle consumes fuel to maintain operation (approx. 0.5 - 1.0 l/h). Engine braking (driving in gear without pressing the gas pedal) is much more effective when the fuel supply is completely cut off.
How much LPG does the car burn compared to gasoline?
LPG consumption is typically 15% to 20% higher than gasoline under the same driving conditions. This is due to the lower calorific value of a liter of autogas compared to unleaded gasoline. Despite higher consumption, due to the low price of LPG, driving on gas remains very profitable.
