Other tools you may find usefulCAGR calculator - calculate the average annual investment growth rate
The CAGR calculator helps you quickly calculate the average annual rate of return your investment generates over several years. Just enter the initial value, final value and investment duration, and the tool will return the CAGR (compound annual growth rate), total return, amount profit, capital doubling time and, optionally, the inflation-adjusted rate of return.
Thanks to this, you can check in one place whether a deposit, investment fund, ETF portfolio, pension plan or your own business is developing at a satisfactory pace. Instead of guessing, you use a simple CAGR calculator that translates scattered numbers into one readable average annual growth rate and allows you to compare different investments with each other.
What is CAGR and when to use it
CAGR, i.e. cumulative annual growth rate, shows the average rate at which a given value grew each year during the analyzed period. Unlike simply calculating profit at the beginning and end, CAGR assumes the effect of compound interest and spreads the entire increase evenly over each year of investment.
It is most often used to evaluate financial investments, such as funds, shares, ETF portfolios, but also to analyze the development of a company's revenues, the number of customers or the market value. The CAGR calculator gives you one easy-to-read percentage that tells you how an investment would behave if it grew at a steady rate year after year from its starting value to its ending value.
- You compare investments of different durations at a common annual level.
- You see how quickly your capital or business is growing in percentage terms.
- You can more easily plan for long-term goals, such as retirement or a life goal.
- You assess whether the portfolio's performance over several years is better than a deposit or another alternative.
The CAGR formula in practical terms
The CAGR formula is based on a simple comparison of the final value to the initial value, taking into account the number of years of investment. In other words, you divide the final value by the initial value, take the square root of the number of years, then subtract 1 and convert the result to a percentage.
It sounds complicated, but the CAGR calculator performs all these activities in the background and immediately gives you a ready result. So just a few numbers are enough to get an answer to the key question: what was the average annual rate of return on this investment over the entire period under study.
- CAGR is based on the idea of compound interest, not simple profit calculation.
- You only need three pieces of data for the calculations: start value, end value and duration.
- The average annual rate of return calculator eliminates the need to calculate the elements yourself.
- Thanks to this solution, you save time and reduce the risk of errors in calculations.
How to use the CAGR calculator step by step
The calculator interface has been designed to be intuitive even for people who are just starting their adventure with investing. Follow the steps below and in just a few moments you will receive a complete analysis of the average annual rate of return on your investment.
- Enter the initial investment value. This is the amount you invested at the start, for example the sum of your first deposit, the purchase of shares, the price of your property or the value of your portfolio at the beginning of the period. Enter it in the "Initial value" field, remembering that the rate of return calculator is based on this base value.
- Enter the final value of the investment. This is the current or ending capital value that you want to compare to your starting point. This may be the value of the portfolio after a few years, the sales price of the property, the balance on the investment account or the value of the company after a few years of revenue growth.
- Specify the investment duration in years. In the appropriate field, enter the number of years for which the capital worked. If the investment lasted, for example, three and a half years, you can enter the value with decimal places so that the CAGR calculator better reflects the actual period.
- Add inflation (optional). In the inflation field, you can enter the average annual inflation level that you want to include in the calculations. Thanks to this, the CAGR calculator will also calculate the rate of return in real terms, i.e. it will show how the investment grew after subtracting the impact of price increases.
- Click the calculate button. After completing all the data, select the "Calculate CAGR" button and the tool will calculate the result in a few moments. On the right side you will see not only the CAGR percentage, but also the total return, the amount profit, the real CAGR rate and the approximate capital doubling time.
- Analyze the result and test different scenarios. You can freely change the input values to see how different rates of return or investment periods affect the final result. Such a dynamic CAGR calculator works like a quick financial laboratory where you test your ideas without the risk of losing money.
What exactly does the CAGR calculator result show
The CAGR percentage itself is only the first element of the analysis that this average annual rate of return calculator offers. To facilitate interpretation, the tool presents several additional indicators that allow you to better understand investment behavior.
Average annual rate of return
This is the basic result of the CAGR calculator, expressed as a percentage. It tells you what average annual rate an investment would have to generate to bring capital from its initial level to a given final value in a given period of time at a constant growth rate.
Total return and amount profit
The CAGR calculator also shows the total return expressed as a percentage and the amount profit, i.e. the difference between the final value and the initial value. Thanks to this, you can see both what percentage you managed to earn over the entire period and how much your capital increased.
Result after taking into account inflation
If you enter the inflation level, the CAGR calculator will also calculate the real average annual rate of return. This is important because only after subtracting inflation you can see whether the investment actually increases the purchasing power of your capital or only maintains its value over time.
After how many years will the capital double
Based on the calculated CAGR, the calculator estimates how many years are needed to double the value of the investment at the same growth rate. This is a simple and illustrative indicator that helps you understand how dynamically your capital is growing and whether it is in line with your expectations.
Examples of uses of the CAGR calculator
You can use the CAGR calculator in many situations, not only in typical stock market investing. The table below shows some practical scenarios where the average annual growth rate helps you make more informed financial decisions.
| Example | Initial value | Final value | Period | What are you analyzing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Investment fund | PLN 20,000 | PLN 31,000 | 5 years | Average annual return from the fund compared to the investment and inflation |
| ETF portfolio | PLN 15,000 | PLN 27,000 | 7 years | Real CAGR after taking into account inflation and comparison with other strategies |
| Property for rent | PLN 300,000 | PLN 430,000 | 8 years | Average annual increase in the value of the apartment, excluding rental fee |
| Company's revenue development | PLN 500,000 | PLN 900,000 | 4 years | CAGR of the company's revenues as a measure of the pace of business development year on year |
CAGR and the classic rate of return and ROI
The simple rate of return, which can be calculated as the difference between the final and initial value divided by the initial value, only tells you how much percentage you gained over the entire period. However, it does not take into account the length of the investment or the effect of compound interest, which makes it difficult to compare results for different time horizons.
CAGR goes a step further and shows what the constant annual growth rate would be that would bring the investment to the same terminal value. This allows the CAGR calculator to easily compare a strategy that lasted, for example, three years with another that lasted six years, because in both cases you get the result expressed as an average annual rate of return.
In turn, ROI (return on investment) is often calculated in its simplest form as one percentage result without breaking it down into years. Therefore, in a situation where you want to make more precise decisions, the CAGR calculator and the cumulative annual growth rate are simply much more informative than the ROI itself given for the entire period.
CAGR calculator FAQ
Can the CAGR calculator show a negative result?
Yes, if the final value of the investment is lower than the initial value, the calculated CAGR will be negative. This means that on average the investment lost its value every year, and each subsequent value was hypothetically lower than the year before.
Does the CAGR calculator take into account investment volatility and risk?
No, CAGR is an averaged indicator that only shows the final effect in the form of one rate of return spread over years. You do not see large fluctuations that may have occurred in individual years, so it is worth supplementing CAGR with other measures if you analyze the portfolio risk in detail.
How to interpret real CAGR after taking into account inflation?
Real CAGR shows how the investment grew after subtracting the impact of inflation, i.e. the increase in the general price level. If the nominal CAGR is, for example, 8 percent and inflation averages 5 percent, the real rate of return will be much lower, which in practice means a smaller increase in the purchasing power of your capital.
Is the CAGR calculator only suitable for financial investments?
No, you can use the CAGR calculator wherever you want to calculate the average annual growth rate of any value. This indicator is great for analyzing company revenues, the number of application users, sales value or market size, because it works the same regardless of the type of data.
Why is the result from the CAGR calculator different from simply dividing profit by the number of years?
A simple division of profit by the number of years assumes linear growth, which does not take into account compound interest. CAGR is based on power and square root, thanks to which it more accurately describes the situation in which profits are reinvested and work for themselves in subsequent years.
