Healthy body weight – how does science determine the correct weight?

Normal weight is a medical and dietary concept defining the body weight that helps maintain health and minimizes the risk of lifestyle diseases (such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis or joint diseases). Determining the ideal weight is not based on subjective aesthetic feelings, but on mathematical models and statistical research. Because each person has a different bone structure and a different level of musculature, the correct weight is not a single number, but a range (weight range) adapted to the height, gender and age of a given person.

Our advanced live weight calculator calculates your ideal weight based on leading medical formulas (Broca's, Lorenz's, Bernhard's formula) and body mass index (BMI), helping you assess whether your current weight is within healthy limits.

Formulas used to calculate the correct weight

In dietetics and medicine, several classic formulas are used for the so-called expected (ideal) weight:

  1. BMI (Body Mass Index):The most popular method, calculated as body weight in kg divided by the square of height in meters. The healthy range for adults is 18.5 to 24.9.

    BMI = mkg/ (heightm

  2. Broca's formula:The oldest, simple formula. For people over 164 cm tall, the correct weight is:

    Ideal weight = height (cm) - 100

  3. Lorenz's formula:A more precise modification of Broca's formula, taking into account the patient's gender:

    For women:Ideal weight = height (cm) - 100 - (height (cm) - 150) / 2

    For men:Ideal weight = height (cm) - 100 - (height (cm) - 150) / 4

Table: Normal weight range for adults based on height

The table below shows the range of normal body weight (corresponding to a healthy BMI from 18.5 to 24.9) depending on height:

Height (cm) Normal minimum weight (kg)
(BMI = 18.5)
Normal maximum weight (kg)
(BMI = 24.9)
Ideal weight according to Lorenz's formula (Women) Ideal weight according to Lorenz's formula (Men)
155 cm 44.4 kg 59.8 kg 52.5 kg 53.7 kg
160 cm 47.4 kg 63.7 kg 55.0 kg 57.5 kg
165 cm 50.4 kg 67.8 kg 57.5 kg 61.2 kg
170 cm 53.5 kg 72.0 kg 60.0 kg 65.0 kg
175 cm 56.7 kg 76.3 kg 62.5 kg 68.7 kg
180 cm 59.9 kg 80.7 kg 65.0 kg 72.5 kg
185 cm 63.3 kg 85.2 kg 67.5 kg 76.2 kg

BMI limitations and body composition

It is worth remembering that indicators such as BMI are only statistical estimates and do not always reflect the actual situation. They do not take into account body composition (the proportion of fat tissue to muscle tissue). For example, a bodybuilder with a height of 180 cm and a weight of 95 kg with a very low fat content will be classified by the BMI calculator as an obese person, which is clinically untrue. Therefore, a more precise test of body composition is bioelectrical impedance (BIA).

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How do I calculate my normal weight?

The quickest way to do this is to set a normal BMI range (18.5 - 24.9) for your height, or use the gender-adjusted Lorenz formula.

Does age affect how much we should weigh?

Yes. With age, the metabolic rate and muscle mass naturally decrease, and the percentage of fat tissue increases. In older people (over 65 years of age), the criteria for a normal BMI are slightly higher (a BMI of 22 to 27 is considered normal).

What is BMI and how to calculate it?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is the body mass index. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared.

What is the difference in the ideal weight formulas for women and men?

Men naturally have greater bone density and a greater proportion of muscle tissue than women of the same height. For this reason, formulas (e.g. Lorenz) subtract less weight for men than for women.

What are the health effects of being significantly overweight?

Being significantly overweight (obesity) drastically increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, as well as some types of cancer and joint degeneration.
