ADHD symptoms in adults – how do they manifest themselves?

In adults, hyperactivity less often means running around the room, and more often means constant internal tension. ADHD affects approximately 2.5–3% of adults; for many people it is only diagnosed after their child is diagnosed.
Positive result - what next?
The screening result isnot a diagnosis- similar symptoms can be caused by stress, insomnia, depression, anxiety disorders or hypothyroidism. The diagnosis of ADHD in adults is made by a psychiatrist (NFZ: referral to a mental health clinic is not required) based on a clinical interview, often using the DIVA-5 structured interview. Write down your answers from the questionnaire - they will be a good starting point for the conversation.
ADHD in adults - symptoms different from those in children
ADHD does not disappear with age - in adults it changes form: instead of running around the classroom, there isinternal anxiety, chronic postponing of tasks (procrastination), losing things and deadlines, "a thousand started projects", impulsive decisions (shopping, speaking), difficulty completing boring tasks while hyper-focus on the fascinating. Many adults with ADHD have been told for years that they are "lazy" or "disorganized" - a diagnosis is often relieving because it names the mechanism.
Positive result - what next?
The ASRS v1.1 is aprzesiewowescreening tool developed by the WHO: a score of 4+ in Part A means that the symptoms are "highly consistent with ADHD" andit is worth consulting a specialist— is not a diagnosis. Full diagnosis by a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist includes a clinical interview (including childhood symptoms - ADHD begins before the age of 12), often an interview from loved ones and tests (e.g. DIVA-5). In Poland, the diagnosis is made by a psychiatrist (National Health Fund: a referral to a mental health clinic is not required; privately: 2–3 visits). Treatment—psychoeducation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and/or pharmacotherapy—significantly improves functioning in most adults. Remember: depression, anxiety disorders, sleep apnea and hypothyroidism also have similar symptoms, so a differential diagnosis is crucial.
