What is the temperament test

This is a short questionnaire describing the natural way of reacting, pace of action and emotional style. Each temperament brings different advantages to work, learning and relationships.

  • Sanguine (SA)- energetic, sociable, oriented towards people and experiences.
  • Melancholic (ME)- analytical, conscientious, sensitive to details and quality.
  • Choleric (CH)- decisive, task-oriented, goal-oriented and results-oriented.
  • Phlegmatic (FL)- calm, stable, mediator, cares about balance and relationships.

The model is developmental. It is not a clinical diagnosis or a fitness test.

Algorithm and scales

The system sums up the points for the four categories based on your answers and converts them into percentages. The dominant result indicates the basic temperament, and slight differences create amixed profile(e.g. SA–FL).

Response scale

Answer Meaning
1 – Definitely not no agreement with the statement
2 – Probably not slight agreement
3 – Rather yes moderate agreement
4 - Definitely yes high agreement

Each statement counts points towards the assigned temperament: SA, ME, CH or FL.

Determining the result

  • We sum up the points in four categories: SA, ME, CH, FL.
  • We convert into percentages of the total sum.
  • Basic Temperament is the category with the highest score.
  • In the event of a tie, the order of resolution is:CH > SA > FL > ME.
  • The second highest score is created bymixed profile code(e.g. CH–SA) and a short description of the mix.
The Mixed Profile describes how your natural tendencies come together, e.g. "Active Mediator" for SA-FL.

Results screen and interpretation

Once completed, you will see a header with the type, a possible mixed profile, and four percentage bars for SA, ME, CH, FL. Below you will find a brief description of the dominant operating style.

How to read percentages

  • 50–60%– slight advantage. Flexible, context-dependent style.
  • 61–75%– moderate preference. Repeatable operation.
  • 76–100%– strong preference. Clear and stable profile.

Low differences between the top two results usually result in a mixed profile.

What to do with the result

  • Note 2 strengths and 2 areas to strengthen.
  • Adjust the way you work: pace, level of detail, form of communication.
  • Compare results with the team and establish principles of cooperation.

You can repeat the test immediately and check the effect of a different context.

Mini Trait Download of the Four Temperaments

A quick overview of the advantages and pitfalls. Helpful when interpreting a mixed profile.

Code Name Perks Traps
SA Sanguine energy, sociability, initiative, quick action scatteredness, incompletion, impulsiveness
ME Melancholic conscientiousness, quality, analysis, consistency perfectionism, slow decisions, overload with details
CH Choleric decision-making, purposefulness, courage, effectiveness dominance, low patience, risk of conflict
FL Phlegmatic calm, stability, mediation, perseverance procrastination, avoidance of disputes, slow rate of change
Ties are broken in the following order: CH > SA > FL > ME. A mixed profile is created from the two highest results and has its own short description.

How to use the result at work

The temperament profile helps you match your operating style to the tasks, team and expectations. This reduces friction and shortens decision times.

Planning and priorities by type

  • SAsanguine: short sprints, quick demos, brainstorming, customer-facing roles.
  • MEmelancholic: specifications, quality checklists, code review, risk analyses.
  • CHcholeric: quarterly goals, KPIs, ownership of decisions, leading initiatives.
  • FLphlegmatic: stable processes, mediations, operational support, team coordination.

  • To MEwritten context, data, definition done.
  • To CHgoal, KPI, deadline, scope of decisions.
  • To FLimpact on people, risks, support plan.

Cooperation matrix

Pair Strength Risk Agreement
SA × ME ideas and quality pace vs details version 1.0 and list of fixes
CH × FL result and stability pressure vs delay milestones and buffers

ME × FL peace and quality too slow interim deadlines and reviews

Dispute resolution

  • Name the difference in the temperature of the dispute, such as CH pace versus FL security.
  • Establish a common goal and definition of done, separate the process discussion from the decision.
  • Use two formats: a one-page summary and an annex with details.

Advice for teams and HR

The temperament profile is an organizational guideline, not the basis for HR decisions. Use it to design collaboration and development.

Team processes

  • Mixed meetings. 3 minutes of silence at the start for ME and FL, then the SA and CH round.
  • Two-level documents. Executive summary for SA and CH, quality annex for ME.
  • Planning. Milestones for CH and JAK will come out for SA, stability buffers for FL.
  • Reviews. Outcome indicators plus a list of risks and corrective actions.

Recruitment and onboarding

  • Role description in two versions. Vision and purpose as well as scope and responsibilities.
  • Hybrid onboarding. Materials for independent work and Q&A sessions.
  • Cross-mentoring. Pair opposite temperaments for faster adaptation.
  • Evaluation based on result and competencies. Temperament profile is context.

Ethics and privacy

  • Voluntary participation in testing.
  • No personnel decisions based solely on profile.
  • Data minimization and clear information about the purpose of use.
Break ties consistent with the tool. Tiebreak order: CH > SA > FL > ME. Use it only technically, not evaluatively.

The most common interpretation errors

  • Treating the profile as a label. Temperament is a preference, not a judgment.
  • Type evaluation. There are no better or worse ones. There are different styles of operation.
  • Ignore mixed profile. The top two results often explain the nuances.
  • Confusing temperament with competence. The score does not measure ability or IQ.
  • Transferring a profile to the entire person. Behaviors change depending on context.
  • Using the test for staffing decisions. The profile is used for communication and development.

Temperament test and other models

Model What does describe What is it good for Attention
Temperaments SA ME CH FL Reaction rate and emotional style Self-development, communication, cooperation Mixed profile adds precision
MBTI Cognitive preferences in 4 pairs Collaborative language and self-analysis Does not measure ability
Big Five Five dimensions of traits Research, psychometric evaluation Other methodology and scales

The models complement each other. You can use the temperament test for everyday cooperation, and the other tools for broader developmental diagnosis.
