It tells the story of Rodion Raskolnikov - a poor student from St. Petersburg who murders the loan shark Alyona Ivanovna and her sister Lizaveta, guided by his own philosophical theory about the "superman". The novel follows his psychological disintegration after the crime until his confession and penance.
