What is WHR?

WHR (waist-hip ratio) is the ratio of waist circumference to hip circumference - a simple indicator of fat tissue distribution. Unlike BMI, it shows whether fat is stored abdominally (an "apple" shape - more metabolically risky) or in the hips ("pear shape").

WHO standards

  • women:normal < 0.80; abdominal obesity ≥ 0.85,
  • men:normal < 0.90; abdominal obesity ≥ 1.00.

How to measure yourself correctly?

Waist: at the narrowest point of the torso (usually about 2 cm above the navel), at the end of a free exhalation. Hips: at the widest point of the buttocks. Horizontal tape, adherent, but not pressing into the body.

WHR and waist circumference standards (WHO)

WHR (waist-hip ratio) = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference. According to the WHO,abdominal obesityis indicated by WHRabove 0.90 in men i above 0.85 in women. The waist circumference itself is also important: the risk is increased from 94 cm (M) / 80 cm (F), significantly increased from 102 cm (M) / 88 cm (W).

WHRMenWomen
pear shape (low risk)< 0.90< 0.80
intermediate zone0.90–0.990.80–0.84
"apple" figure (abdominal obesity)≥ 1.00≥ 0.85

How to measure for a reliable result

Waist:halfway between the lower rib and the upper edge of the hip bone (usually at the level of the navel), at the end of a free exhalation, without drawing in the abdomen.Hips:at the widest part of the buttocks. Horizontal measuring tape, tight but not pressing into the body; measurement in the morning, before a meal. WHR can be a better predictor of cardiovascular risk than BMI alone because it localizes visceral fat - but it is best to look at both indicators together:BMI calculator+ WHR, and cardiac risk is estimated bySCORE2 calculator.

WHtR - waist-height ratio, a simple rival of WHR

WHtR (waist-to-height ratio) is waist circumference divided by height - both in the same units (e.g. cm). It is sometimes called the simplest health rule:waist circumference should be less than half ofheight, i.e. WHtR < 0.5. The advantage is one universal threshold, regardless of gender, and to calculate it, all you need is a tailor's tape and knowledge of your height - hips are not needed.

WHtR (waist ÷ height)Interpretation
below 0.40possible weight deficiency - it is worth consulting
0.40–0.49healthy range
0.50–0.59increased risk - consider lifestyle changes
0.60 and abovehigh metabolic risk

Example: if you are 175 cm tall, the warning threshold is a waist of 87.5 cm. WHtR often detects risk earlier than BMI in people with normal weight but a "belly".

WHR, WHtR or BMI - which indicator to choose

None of these indicators are perfect alone - they describe different things and work best together.

  • BMI(weight ÷ height²) assesses overall body weight relative to height, but does not distinguish muscle from fat or show where fat is stored. It works as a quick population screening - you can count them in theBMI calculator.
  • WHRrevealsbody type- "apple" (belly fat, more risky) versus "pear". Good when you want to assess fat distribution.
  • WHtRcombines simplicity with accuracy - a single threshold of 0.5, without hip measurement, and may be a better predictor of cardio-metabolic risk than BMI alone.

Practical: start with BMI, and if you are normal or borderline weight, add WHR and WHtR to check whether abdominal obesity is behind it. Indicators arewarning signs, not diagnoses- leave the full risk assessment to your doctor.

FAQ

Which is better: WHR or BMI?
These are complementary indicators. BMI assesses body weight in relation to height, WHR - fat distribution. A person with a normal BMI may have an increased WHR (abdominal obesity) and vice versa. It's best to check both.
What WHR is attractive?
Research on body shape perception indicates approximately 0.7 in women and 0.9 in men, but this is an anthropological curiosity - WHO standards are what counts in terms of health.
Does WHR work for athletes?
Yes - unlike BMI, it does not overestimate the result in case of high muscle mass, because it measures the proportions of circumference, not weight.
