Chocolate under the microscope - the calorie content of a popular sweet depending on the type

Chocolate is undoubtedly the king of confectionery products, which we willingly reach for when we are tired or to improve our mood. From a dietetics perspective, chocolate is a high-calorie product with high energy density. A standard chocolate bar (100g) provides from 530 to even 580 kilocalories (kcal) - the exact value depends on the proportion of cocoa mass, fat (cocoa butter), sugar and additives such as powdered milk, nuts or fruit filling. One single cube of chocolate (approx. 6g) provides from 22 to 35 kcal.

Our interactive online chocolate calorie calculator allows you to instantly calculate the calorie content and macronutrient profile for various numbers of cubes, strips or whole bars of dark, milk, white and dessert chocolate.

Cocoa as a source of flavonoids, antioxidants and magnesium in dark chocolate

It is worth remembering that not all chocolate has the same effect on health. The most valuable is dark chocolate (with cocoa content over 70%). Cocoa mass is rich in biologically active compounds:

  • Polyphenols and flavonoids:Strong antioxidants that fight free radicals, protect blood vessels against the build-up of atherosclerotic plaque and help naturally lower blood pressure.
  • Magnesium:Supports the proper functioning of the nervous system, prevents painful muscle spasms and relieves the effects of stress.
  • Neuroactive substances:Contains theobromine and tryptophan (an amino acid needed for the production of serotonin - the happiness hormone), which explains the immediate improvement in well-being after eating chocolate.

Table of nutritional values: dark chocolate vs. milk vs. white (in 100g)

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many calories does one square of chocolate have and how many calories does the whole bar have?

One small square of chocolate weighs about 6 grams and provides 32 to 36 kilocalories (kcal). The entire classic chocolate bar weighs 100 grams and, depending on the type, provides from 530 kcal (milk) to nearly 600 kcal (dark with high cocoa content).

Which chocolate is the healthiest and why?

The healthiest is definitely dark chocolate with a cocoa mass content of at least 70%, and preferably 85% or more. It contains much less added sugar and is the richest source of beneficial polyphenols, theobromine, fiber and magnesium.

Is white chocolate really chocolate?

Legally - yes, if it contains at least 20% cocoa fat. However, from a dietary point of view, white chocolate does not contain dry cocoa mass (which gives chocolate its dark color). It consists only of cocoa butter, powdered milk and sugar, which is why it is devoid of most of the unique health-promoting properties of cocoa.

What is the glycemic index (GI) of dark chocolate and milk chocolate?

The glycemic index of dark chocolate (above 70%) is approximately 20-25, which means a very low absorption rate. The glycemic index of milk chocolate ranges from 50 to 60, and white chocolate reaches up to 70 (high glycemic index, causing a quick release of glucose in the blood).

Is chocolate addictive?

Chocolate is not physically addictive like psychoactive substances. However, the unique combination of high fat and simple sugar content strongly stimulates the reward center in the brain and stimulates the secretion of dopamine, which in many people causes a strong desire to reach for another portion in times of stress or low mood.
