The dosage of both drugs differs due to the different potency of the active substances and different safety profiles:
- Ibuprofen:It has an antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It is given as a single dose of7 to 10 mg per kilogram of the child'sweight. The medicine can be administered a maximum of 3-4 times a day (every 6-8 hours). the maximum daily dose is 30 mg/kg. Do not use in children under 3 months of age.
- Paracetamol:Has an antipyretic and analgesic effect (does not have an anti-inflammatory effect). The single dose is10 to 15 mg per kilogram of the child'sweight. The medicine can be administered every 4-6 hours, up to 4-5 times a day. The maximum daily dose is 60 mg/kg. It can be used from the first days of life after consulting a doctor.

Rules for the safe administration of medicines to children
For the treatment of fever in children to be effective and safe, parents should remember the following recommendations:
- Always use a dosing syringe:Kitchen spoons have different capacities. Only use the dispensers included in the medicine package.
- Pay attention to the concentration:Syrups with the same substance may differ in concentration (e.g. ibuprofen standard is 100mg/5ml, and forte is 200mg/5ml). Administering a forte dose according to the standard schedule may result in a double overdose!
- Medical consultation:Any fever in an infant under 3 months of age requires urgent contact with a doctor. In older children, consultation is necessary if the fever lasts longer than 3 days or is accompanied by other disturbing symptoms.

How to calculate the dose of antipyretic syrup for a child?
The single dose is calculated by multiplying the child's weight by the recommended amount of the substance (e.g. for paracetamol 15 mg/kg). The result obtained in mg is converted into milliliters depending on the concentration of the syrup (e.g. 120 mg of paracetamol is 5 ml of standard syrup).
Why are medications dosed based on the child's weight and not on the child's age?
Children of the same age may have different body weights. Administration of the drug according to age in a child with a low weight may lead to poisoning, and in a child with a higher weight - the dose will be too small and will not work.
Can ibuprofen and paracetamol be administered alternately?
Yes, in the case of a fever that is difficult to control, doctors allow the administration of both drugs alternately (e.g. a different drug every 4 hours). However, this requires careful recording of hours and doses so as not to exceed the daily limits of any substance.
What should I do if my child vomits the medicine after taking it?
If vomiting occurs within 15 minutes of administration, the medicine has usually not had time to be absorbed and the dose can be repeated (or the medicine can be administered in a suppository). If more than 30 minutes have passed, the medicine has probably been absorbed and you should wait until the next planned dose.
From what age can ibuprofen be given to a child?
Ibuprofen can be safely used in infants from 3 months of age (weighing over 5 kg). Younger children are given paracetamol under strict medical supervision.
