Cottage cheese - traditional Polish white cheese under the dietary microscope

Cottage cheese (white cheese) is one of the most traditional and popular dairy products in Poland. Produced from cow's milk through the process of acidification and then heating and straining the whey, it is a regular element of breakfasts. In dietetics, cottage cheese has a cult status - it is valued as one of the cheapest and most valuable sources of high-quality animal protein. The caloric value of cottage cheese is directly related to the fat content of the milk used for production. 100 grams of low-fat cottage cheese provides only 85 kilocalories (kcal), while fatty cottage cheese has almost twice the energy value (approx. 155 kcal).

Our interactive cottage cheese calorie calculator allows you to quickly check the calorie content of a cube (200g), spoon or slice of cheese for all three variants (lean, semi-skimmed, fatty), making it easier to balance the menu on reduction or mass.

Casein protein in cottage cheese – why is it worth eating it in the evening?

The main advantage of cottage cheese is the high content of **casein** - slowly absorbing milk protein. Casein, under the influence of stomach acids, forms a thick gel that is slowly digested by the body. Thanks to this, amino acids are released into the bloodstream gradually, even for 6-8 hours after consumption. This makes cottage cheese an ideal meal before bed (e.g. with the addition of nuts) for physically active people - it prevents night-time muscle catabolism, supports regeneration and guarantees a stable level of satiety until the morning.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

How many calories does a cube of semi-skimmed cottage cheese (200g) have?

A standard cube (wedge or paper cube) of semi-skimmed cottage cheese weighs 200 grams and provides about 230 kilocalories (kcal) and over 37 grams of pure protein.

Why does cottage cheese have less calcium than yellow cheese?

During the production of yellow cheese, the milk is coagulated under the influence of rennet, which binds calcium in the curd. When producing cottage cheese (acid method), a large part of the calcium dissolves in the whey and is filtered out. Therefore, 100g of yellow cheese has approximately 800-1000 mg of calcium, and 100g of cottage cheese has only approximately 90 mg.

Can people with lactose intolerance eat cottage cheese?

Cottage cheese naturally contains small amounts of lactose (approx. 3g per 100g), because part of the milk sugar is broken down during acid fermentation, and the rest flows out with the whey. People with mild intolerance usually tolerate it well. For people with severe intolerance, lactose-free cottage cheese is available (with the addition of the lactase enzyme).

Which cottage cheese should you choose for weight loss - low-fat or semi-skimmed?

Dietitians most often recommend semi-skimmed cottage cheese. Although low-fat cottage cheese has fewer calories, the complete lack of fat worsens the taste of the product, hinders the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D) and makes the meal less filling, which may lead to quicker snacking.

Are cottage cheese and cottage cheese the same thing?

No. Cottage cheese is a compact, drained cheese curd with a uniform or slightly lumpy structure. Cottage cheese consists of small cottage cheese grains immersed in liquid, sweet cream, which makes it saltier and has a slightly higher fat content than low-fat cottage cheese.
