Why count the increase in beta-hCG?

Chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) increases exponentially in early pregnancy. A single result doesn't say much - what matters isdynamics, i.e. how hCG changes between two measurements. The calculator calculates the percentage increase and doubling time of the hormone based on two results and the time interval.

How to interpret the result?

In normal early pregnancy, beta-hCG usually increases byby at least 53–66% within 48 hours(doubling every 48–72 h). Slower growth or decline may require further diagnostics - but only a doctor, in combination with an ultrasound examination, can assess whether the pregnancy is developing properly.

Approximate beta-hCG norms in pregnancy

One week after conceptionBeta-hCG range (mIU/ml)
3rd week5 – 50
4th week5 – 426
week 518 – 7,340
week 61,080 – 56,500
7–8. week7,650 – 229,000
9.–12. week (peak)25,700 – 288,000
2nd trimester13,300 – 254,000

The ranges arevery wide and partially overlap- a single result almost never allows you to "date" a pregnancy or assess its condition.dynamicsare important: in early pregnancy (hCG < 1200), the concentration usually doubles every 48–72 hours; the calculator will calculate the doubling time from the two results and their dates.

How to interpret growth - and what the result won't tell

Growth ≥ 53% in 48 hours is considered normal in early pregnancy; slower may be a signal to be vigilant (but approximately 15% of normal pregnancies grow slower!). After 6–7 week the pace naturally slows down, and from about 9–12 week, the concentration ofdrops - this is the norm, not a reason to panic. Twins usually give higher values, but the spread is too large to "diagnose" them with hCG. Always discuss the results with your gynecologist - especially if there is spotting, pain or values that are inappropriate for the gestational age (risk of ectopic pregnancy). You can estimate your due date in thedue date calculator.

Beta hCG and a home pregnancy test - at what level is it detectable

Home test strips detect hCG in urine, but only above a certain sensitivity threshold - most often10, 20 or 25 mIU/ml(the lower the number on packaging, the more sensitive the test). A blood test (quantitative beta hCG) detects the hormone earlier and gives an exact numerical value, which is why it can be positive even a few days before the urine test.

MethodDetection thresholdWhen reliable
Blood test (quantitative beta hCG)from approx. 1–2 mIU/mleven approx. 8–10 days after ovulation
Sensitive urine strip test10–25 mIU/mlfrom the first day of missed menstruation
Standard urine testapprox. 25 mIU/mla few days after the expected period

Performing a urine test too early is the most common cause offalse negativeresult - if pregnancy is suspected and the test strip is negative, it is worth repeating it after 2-3 days or performing a blood test.

When hCG is unusual - situations requiring vigilance

The level or dynamics of hCG itself may differ from typical ranges for several reasons. Theseare not diagnoses, but circumstances that are discussed with the doctor:

  • Values that are too low for the gestational age or falling- may be a signal of threatened miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy (especially with abdominal pain or spotting); require urgent inspection.
  • Values clearly higher than expected- may accompany multiple pregnancy, but this is only confirmed by ultrasound.
  • hCG after miscarriage or childbirth— decreases gradually over several weeks, which is why the test may still be positive even though the pregnancy has ended.
  • High-dose hook effect- with very high hCG, the strip test may paradoxically show a weaker line; blood test does not have this problem.

Important:all values and tables in this tool are indicative and vary between laboratories. The calculator does not replace consultation - each beta hCG result is interpreted by a doctor along with ultrasound and symptoms. You can estimate your expected due date in thedue date calculator.

FAQ

What does a slower increase in hCG mean?
It may be a variant of the norm or a signal requiring control (e.g. ectopic pregnancy, threat of miscarriage). The result is always interpreted by a doctor along with the ultrasound and symptoms.
After how many hours should the hCG test be repeated?
Most often every 48 hours - this is a standard interval allowing to assess the dynamics of growth.
Does high hCG mean a multiple pregnancy?
Very high values may suggest a twin pregnancy, but this is only confirmed by ultrasound. A single result is not sufficient for diagnosis.
