Click "Start Test" and allow the browser to access your microphone. Speak in a normal voice - if the microphone is working, you will see a movinglevel bar andsound waveform. The test takes place entirely in your browser (Web Audio API):sound is not recorded or sent anywhere.
Microphone not working? Check this
- Browser permissions- click the padlock next to the website address and allow microphone,
- System mute- check the microphone slider in Windows/macOS sound settings,
- Bad input device- if you have several microphones (camera, headphones), choose the correct one from lists in our test,
- Physical switch- many headsets have a mute slider on the cable,
- Another application is blocking the microphone- close video chat programs running in the background.
Microphone not working? Common causes and quick fixes
- Browser permission denied- click the padlock next to the website address and set "Microphone: allow"; without it the test will not start.
- Wrong microphone selected in the system- with several devices (headphones, camera, built-in) the system often selects the wrong one: Windows → Settings → System → Sound → Input; macOS → System Settings → Sound.
- Hardware Mute- Many headsets have a physical mute switch on the cable or on the ear cup.
- System Privacy- Windows and macOS have a separate microphone access switch for applications (Settings → Privacy → Microphone).
- Bluetooth in headphone mode- BT headphones have worse quality after switching to the call profile (HFP); it's normal.
How to check microphone quality before a call
The test shows thelive signal level(the bar/graph responds to voice) and allows you to record a sample with listening - you will hear yourself exactly as others hear you on Teams, Zoom or Discord. What to pay attention to: speak from a distance of 10-20 cm; if the recording "distortes" (pops with loud words), reduce the sensitivity in the system to ~70-80%; the background noise will be reduced by the noise reduction function in the calling application. Nothing is sent to the server - the audio is processed locally in the browser. After the microphone, also testthe keyboard and your reflexes.
How to improve the quality of the microphone recording
The audible difference between "understandable" and professional sound is usually a few simple corrections, not more expensive equipment. You will gain the most by working ondistance, acoustics and background sound.
- Distance and direction- speak from 10-20 cm, slightly to the side of the microphone axis, not straight into the diaphragm. Too close = distortion and "boom" on plosives; too far = reverberation and noise.
- Pop filter or sponge- eliminates tastes on the sounds "p" and "b" (so-called pops). Speaking slightly sideways helps temporarily.
- Room acoustics— hard, empty walls echo. A carpet, curtains, a bookshelf or even recording in a smaller, "soft" room significantly improves the sound.
- Noise reduction- turn off the fan/air conditioning for the duration of the recording; turn on noise reduction in conversation applications, but not to the maximum, because it "swallows" the endings of words.
- Level (gain)- set it so that during normal speech the indicator reach
