Formula for calculating scale distances

Conversion of scale dimensions is based on fractional proportions. The scale notation is written as1 : M, whereMis the scale denominator (enlargement or reduction factor):

To calculate the distance on the ground (dthing), the distance measured on the map (dmap) should be multiplied by the scale denominator (M). Finally, remember to convert the obtained units (e.g. centimeters) into more practical meters or kilometers:

dmap= dthing/ M

In the case of a magnifying scale (e.g. 5:1 - used for microscopic details), the dimension in the drawing is five times larger than the real one.

Let's assume you have a tourist map at a scale of1:50,000. You have measured the distance between two mountain peaks with a ruler and it is6 cm. How to calculate the actual distance in kilometers?

  1. Use the formula:Multiply the distance from the map by the denominator of the scale: 6 cm × 50,000 = 300,000 cm.
  2. Convert centimeters to meters:Knowing that 1 meter is 100 cm, divide the result by 100: 300,000 cm / 100 = 3000 meters.
  3. Convert meters to kilometers:Knowing that 1 km is 1000 meters, divide the result by 1000: 3000 m / 1000 = 3 km.
