How permilles are calculated

Estimated alcohol concentration is calculated based on the amount of pure alcohol, body weight and depending on gender (Widmark's formula). The body metabolizes alcohol at an approximately constant rate, which allows us to estimate the sobering time.

Why is it just an estimate

The actual concentration depends on many factors: drinking rate, meals, metabolism, medications and health condition. Therefore, the calculator result is indicative and may differ significantly from the actual measurement.

Permissible permille limit in Poland

There are two thresholds in Poland.0.2–0.5 per milleis a state after drinking alcohol - an offense (fine, driving ban).Above 0.5 per milleis a state of intoxication - a crime under the Penal Code. The thresholds also apply to cyclists and electric scooter drivers (for them the penalties are milder, but detention and fines are real). In practice, even one beer can take you over the 0.2‰ threshold - so simply do not get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol.

How long does it take to sober up after drinking beer, wine and vodka?

The liver metabolizes alcohol at a constant rate of approximately0.1-0.15 per mille per hourand this cannot be accelerated by coffee, a cold shower or food. Approximate values for a man approx. 80 kg (women achieve higher concentrations with the same dose):

How the calculator calculates per mille - Widmark's formula

Calculations are based on the classic Widmark's formula:‰ = A ÷ (m × r), where A is the mass of pure alcohol consumed in grams, m - body weight, and r - distribution coefficient (approx. 0.7 for men and 0.6 for women, because the water content in our bodies differs). Already metabolized alcohol is subtracted from the result (time × burning rate). The actual concentration also depends on what you ate, how fast you drink, your age and genetics - which is why no calculator can replace a breathalyzer, and a breathalyzer cannot replace common sense.
