Beer is the most popular alcoholic drink in the world, made from malt, water, hops and yeast. Although 100 milliliters of classic light lager beer contains relatively few calories - about 43 kcal - due to the volume in which beer is usually consumed, it is a powerful source of energy. One standard bottle or can of beer with a capacity of 500 ml provides from 215 to even 300 kcal (in the case of strong, dark or flavored beers). Beer is rich in simple carbohydrates with a very high glycemic index, which directly stimulates the deposition of fat tissue, especially around the belly.
Our advanced beer calorie calculator allows you to check the energy balance of various beer styles (lager, IPA, dark, wheat, flavored and non-alcoholic beers) per bottle or mug.
Why does beer make you gain weight? The impact of alcohol and maltose on the body
The increase in body weight in people who regularly drink beer is due to three main biochemical factors:
- High glycemic index:Beer contains maltose - a disaccharide with a glycemic index of as much as 110 (which is much higher than pure glucose). This causes an immediate and drastic release of insulin, which is a strongly anabolic hormone that blocks lipolysis (fat burning).
- Stopping fat burning with alcohol:Alcohol (ethanol) provides 7 kcal per gram. It is a toxin for the body, so after consuming it, the liver immediately switches to metabolizing alcohol, stopping the burning of dietary fats for many hours.
- Appetite stimulation:The alcohol contained in beer irritates the gastric mucosa, lowers blood sugar levels and inhibits the functioning of the satiety center in the brain. As a result, after drinking beer, there is a huge appetite for salty, fatty and caloric snacks (chips, nuts, pizza, kebab), which drastically increases the daily calorie balance.
Comparison table of calorie content of different types of beer (in 100ml and 500ml)
The table below shows the calorie and alcohol content in the most popular types of beer:
| Type of beer | Caloric content in 100ml | Caloric content in a large beer (500ml) | Average alcohol content (%) | Carbohydrate load in 500ml |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full light beer (Lager) | 43 kcal | 215 kcal | 5.0% | approx. 15 g |
| Strong dark beer | 68 kcal | 340 kcal | 7.5% | approx. 30 g (a lot of residual sugar) |
| Wheat beer | 45 kcal | 225 kcal | 5.0% | approx. 18 g |
| Flavored beer / Radler | 55 kcal | 275 kcal | 2.5% | approx. 35 g (addition of sugar syrup) |
| Non-alcoholic beer (0.0%) | 24 kcal | 120 kcal | 0.0% | approx. 25 g |
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
How many calories does one large light beer from a can have?
One large full light beer (500 ml) with an alcohol content of about 5-5.5% provides on average about 215-230 kilocalories (kcal).
Why does non-alcoholic beer have fewer calories?
Because it does not contain ethyl alcohol, which itself is very high in calories (1 gram of pure alcohol is as much as 7 kcal, while 1 gram of carbohydrates is 4 kcal). Removing alcohol reduces the caloric value of beer by nearly 40-50%.
Does beer alone make your belly grow (so-called beer belly)?
Not from the beer itself, but from the calorie surplus. Beer provides a lot of easily digestible calories, blocks the fat burning process and drastically increases appetite. Overeating after drinking beer is the main cause of visceral fat being stored on the belly.
What is the glycemic index (GI) of beer?
The glycemic index of light beer is as much as 110. This is one of the highest values among all food products. Drinking beer causes a sudden increase in blood glucose, making this drink inadvisable for people with insulin resistance and diabetes.
Does beer have any nutritional value and vitamins?
Yes, beer contains certain amounts of B vitamins (derived from brewer's yeast), potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and silicon (beneficial to bones). It also contains antioxidants from hops. However, alcohol's negative effects on the body far outweigh these minor nutritional benefits.
