Buying a car is one of the biggest financial decisions for most individuals and companies. There are several vehicle financing models currently available on the market: traditional cash purchase, car loan, operational or financial leasing and the increasingly popular long-term rental (called car subscription). Each of these forms has specific advantages, hidden costs and different tax consequences (particularly important for entrepreneurs settling income tax and VAT in Poland). Our advanced calculator for leasing and renting vs. buying a car allows you to compare these options, taking into account parameters such as the car price, financing period, down payment, redemption value, and service and insurance costs.
Thanks to this, you will precisely calculate the total cost of ownership of the vehicle (TCO - Total Cost of Ownership) and find out which solution will be the most profitable for your wallet.
Comparison of car financing models (Table of costs and features)
The choice of financing depends on whether we care about vehicle ownership, low monthly installments or full convenience. The table below compares the four main forms:
| Feature/Cost | Cash Purchase | Car Loan | Operating Lease | Long-Term Rental |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicle Ownership | From Day One (100% Ownership). | Client's property (often with transfer of ownership to the bank). | The lessor is the owner until redemption. | The owner is the rental company (no purchase option or high price). |
| Own payment (Initial rent) | 100% of the vehicle price. | Usually from 0% to 30% of the car's value. | From 0% to 45% of the value (reduces the installment). | Often 0% or a nominal upfront fee. |
| Monthly installment amount | No installment. | Medium/High (principal and interest repayment). | Average (impairment repayment + margin). | Low (you only pay off the loss of value during the contract). |
| Insurance and service | Paid by the owner (full cost). | Owner pays (full AC required). | Paid by the lessee (often insurance in installments). | Included in the installment (service, tires, insurance, assistance). |
| Mileage limit | No mileage limit. | No limit. | Typically none (or optional in the contract). | Mandatory annual limit (e.g. 15,000 – 30,000 km). |
Tax consequences for companies in Poland (CIT / PIT / VAT)
When choosing financing, entrepreneurs in Poland are guided primarily by the possibility of including expenses in tax-deductible costs (TUR). From 2019, limits for passenger cars apply:
- Limit of PLN 150,000:For combustion and hybrid cars, the limit for including the car's value in depreciation or leasing costs is PLN 150,000. The surplus above this amount does not constitute a BUY.
- Limit PLN 225,000:Increased limit for electric (zero-emission) cars, which is intended to stimulate the development of electromobility in companies.
- VAT deduction (50% vs 100%):If the car is used in mixed mode (private and business), the entrepreneur can deduct 50% of VAT from leasing installments, fuel and service. 100% deduction requires keeping detailed vehicle mileage records (kilometers) for the Tax Office.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is more profitable for an entrepreneur: operational leasing or long-term rental?
Operating leasing is more profitable if you plan to buy the car after the end of the contract for a low amount (e.g. 1%) and use it for the following years or sell it privately. Long-term rental is better if you want a low monthly payment, you are not interested in owning the vehicle and you want to replace the car with a new one every 2-3 years, avoiding problems with service and subsequent sale.
Can a private person (not running a business) lease a car?
Yes, the so-called consumer leasing (private). It operates on similar principles to leasing for companies, but does not carry any tax benefits (the costs cannot be deducted from tax). It is often an alternative to a cash loan, offering simpler creditworthiness verification procedures.
What happens if the kilometer limit is exceeded in long-term rental?
In long-term rental agreements, exceeding the declared annual or total mileage limit requires an additional payment for each excess kilometer. These rates are specified in the contract and usually range from 20 to 80 cents per kilometer, which in the case of large surpluses may drastically increase the final cost of the contract.
Is own payment (initial rent) obligatory in leasing?
No, many leasing companies offer financing with 0% down payment. However, this usually requires a higher creditworthiness of the company (good financial results or longer experience on the market). The down payment reduces the lessor's risk and allows you to obtain a lower monthly installment.
Who is responsible for traffic damage (collisions) in a rented or leased car?
In both cases, the car must have full third party liability/AC insurance. In the event of a collision, damage is covered by the AC policy. However, it is worth paying attention to the so-called own share in damage specified in the rental agreement - in some contracts the tenant must cover a fixed fee (e.g. PLN 500-1000) for each reported damage due to his fault.
