Car depreciation calculator

Estimate how much your car will be worth after a selected period of time. Enter the initial price, number of years and annual depreciation rate, and the calculator will calculate the value of the vehicle after its useful life. The mechanism uses a geometric decline model, which provides a good approximation of how cars actually become cheaper over time.

Why count car depreciation

Depreciation is usually the biggest cost of owning a car. Even if a car doesn't drive much, its market value usually decreases every year. Knowing the scale of the decline helps make rational decisions: whether it is worth keeping the car longer, when it is worth selling it, what impact the mileage or equipment has on the future price, and how to compare new and used cars in the total cost of ownership. For companies, the result is important when planning the fleet budget and assessing the residual value during the leasing period.

How the calculator works

The model assumes that each year the value of the car decreases by a constant percentage compared to the value at the beginning of that year. This is a geometric decline, i.e. capitalization decreasing over time. If we denote the initial price asC0, the annual depreciation asdin percent and the number of years ast, then the value retention coefficient isr = 1 − d/100, and the value after timetis calculated as formula:

In practice, this means that if a car loses 15 percent of its current value every year, after the first year it has 85 percent of its starting price, after the second year 85 percent of the value from the first year and so on. This model better reflects the market than a simple linear decline because the fastest loss of value usually occurs in the first years and the rate decreases over time, although it does not cease to be important.

Practical note: choose the depreciation rate based on real data regarding the segment, brand, engine and mileage. For popular cars in good condition and with lower mileage, typical rates are lower than for niche models or those with high fuel consumption. If you don't have the data, use a conservative range and check the sensitivity of the result.

Calculation example with default parameters

Let's assume the initial pricePLN 120,000, time5 yearsand annual depreciation15 percent. The value retention factor isr = 1 − 0.15 = 0.85. Value after 5 years:

W(5) = 120,000 × 0.855≈ 120,000 × 0.4437053125 ≈ PLN 53,244.64

This result shows the effect of compound interest on the present value. Each subsequent year is counted from a lower base, therefore the rate of nominal decline decreases, although the percentage itself remains constant.

How to choose the annual depreciation rate

A rate of 10 to 20 percent per year is often used as a starting point for new cars in the first few years. Premium segment models may lose faster at the start, but later their curve tends to be more stable, especially in well-maintained models. City cars with low maintenance costs and popular engines may have a smoother decline path. Electric and hybrid cars are subject to different dynamics, depending on battery warranties, availability of subsidies and charging technology. If you're evaluating a used vehicle, you can use a lower rate for subsequent years to simulate the flattening effect of the curve, or count several variants and compare the results.

Limitations and assumptions of the model

The model does not know the realities of a specific example. It does not take into account mileage, service history, damage, paint quality, equipment version, type of gearbox and seasonality of demand. It also does not take into account tax changes, exchange rate fluctuations or the introduction of a new generation of a given model, which may significantly change the attractiveness of the previous version. The result should be treated as an estimate. It works well as a tool for quick comparisons, budget plans and preliminary scenario analyses. When making purchasing decisions, it is worth comparing it with market data, advertisement reports and the opinion of an appraiser.

Interpretation Guidelines

If you plan to use it for a short period of time, annual depreciation has the greatest impact on costs. A longer horizon reduces the share of depreciation per month, but the risk of unforeseen repairs and regulatory changes increases. For fleet vehicles, it is worth combining depreciation with operational savings, such as lower fuel consumption, longer service intervals or warranty terms. When comparing two models, calculate the residual value in several rate options and choose the one that fits your conservative assumptions.

Scenarios to check

Start with the default parameters, then change only one factor at a time. Increase the depreciation rate by 2 points and check the difference in value after 5 years. Then extend the period by one year at a constant rate and compare the impact of time. Finally, adjust the starting price by 10 percent up and down to see how the fluctuations in the purchase price translate into loss of face value. This approach allows you to quickly identify the most important factor in your case.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator work for months, not just years

The model assumes years as a unit of time. If you want to estimate a period of less than a year, you can convert the rate to monthly periods and use the formula with a different r. For example, for 15 percent per annum, the monthly rate is roughly around 1.25 percent, but in practice the market does not always reflect an equal division of the annual rate among the months.

Whether a minimum final value can be enforced

In the real world, certain models retain some value regardless of age due to their collectible nature or very low maintenance costs. If you want to simulate a minimum residual value, use the lower threshold in the benchmarking and interpret the results according to the context.

Is the depreciation the same for different runs

No. Mileage is one of the key price factors. Two identical models with different mileage may differ in final value by several percent. The percentage model is a simplification. To improve it, combine the results with data from the advertising market.

How to include additional equipment

It is best to count two versions of the starting price. One is the list price, the other is the list price plus packages that actually increase the resale value. Not all equipment pays off at the same rate, so be selective.

Good practices when planning a purchase

If you are buying a new car, pay attention to the warranty conditions, the quality of anti-corrosion protection and the popularity of the engine version. If you are looking for a used car, choose models with a full service history, preferably with documented repairs and inspections. For both cases, consider insurance costs, parts and service availability, and an independent mechanic's opinion before making your decision. Combine these factors with the calculator results and you'll get a more complete picture of your total cost of ownership.
