What is YTM?
Yield to Maturity (YTM)is the rate of return an investor will receive if he holds the bond to maturity, receiving all coupons and principal on schedule. YTM takes into account the market price, par value, coupon rate, number of periods and payout frequency.
YTM formula (simplified)
Bond_price = Σ [ Coupon / (1 + YTM)^t ] + Nominal value / (1 + YTM)^n where: Coupon = Nominal value × Coupon_rate t = number of the coupon period n = number of periods to maturity YTM = annual yield to maturity (searched)
This equation is solved iteratively (numerically), e.g. by the Newton-Raphson method. The calculator automatically approximates the result with an accuracy of 0.0001.
YTM calculation example
Example 1 – discount bond
Data:face value PLN 1,000, price PLN 950, coupon 5%, period 3 years, annual payment.
- Coupon = 1000 × 0.05 = PLN 50
- Solution of the equation → YTM ≈6.8 %
Example 2 – bond with a premium
Data:face value PLN 1,000, price PLN 1,040, 7% coupon, 4-year period, annual payment.
- Coupon = PLN 70
- Solution of the equation → YTM ≈6.2 %

What is the difference between YTM and a coupon?
The coupon is a fixed annual payment (% of the face value). YTM also takes into account the difference between the purchase price and the redemption value, showing the actual profitability.
Is YTM the bond interest rate?
No. YTM is the effective rate of return assuming the bond is held to maturity and the coupons are reinvested at the same rate.
