- Step height- in centimeters. The standard step is 16-18 cm.
- Time- optional, in minutes. This will also give you an estimate of your intensity in kcal/min.
- Descent- If you wish to include descent, select this option and set the cost factor. Usually 0.3–0.5 is assumed because the descent is less energy-consuming than the ascent.
How the calculator works
The basis is potential energy:E = m × g × h, where m is your body mass, g = 9.81 m/s², and h is the height you climbed. The height is calculated as the number of steps × step height. The result in joules is converted into calories (1 kcal ≈ 4184 J). The calculator also takes into account the body's metabolic efficiency, because humans do not use energy perfectly. Ultimately, you get the value of calories burned.
If you select the "include descent" option, the descent cost calculated as a percentage of the entry cost (the coefficient you set) is added to the result.
Usage examples
Example 1: 70 kg, 200 degrees up, no descent
200 degrees × 0.17 m = 34 m height difference. Potential energy = 70 × 9.81 × 34 ≈ 23.3 kJ. After taking into account fitness, it is about 6 kcal. If you regularly climb several floors a day, this amounts to several dozen kcal of additional expenditure per week.
Example 2: 80 kg, 5 floors, 18 steps per floor, step height 17 cm
Total 90 degrees, height 90 × 0.17 = 15.3 m. Energy ≈ 12 kJ, which corresponds to 3 kcal. If the user does this 5 times a day, that's an additional 15 kcal. Over 400 kcal in a month.
Example 3: 60 kg, 120 degrees up and down, descent rate 0.4
Ascent: height 20.4 m, energy ≈ 12 kJ ≈ 3 kcal. Descending adds 40% of this value, or about 1.2 kcal. Total ≈ 4.2 kcal.

Default no, counts the pure energy associated with lifting the mass. If you enter a time, the extended result shows your average fuel consumption per minute. A faster pace increases the real metabolic cost.

Is it worth marking the descent?
