Adding hours and minutes without errors

Adding time "on foot" is easy to mess up, because 60 minutes is an hour, not 100. Our calculator adds any number of items in the HH:MM format (you can also subtract) and shows the result in two notations:HH:MManddecimal(e.g. 8:45 = 8.75 h) - the latter is used by HR and invoice systems.

How to convert minutes to decimal?

Divide minutes by 60: 15 min = 0.25 h; 30 min = 0.5 h; 45 min = 0.75 h. Example: 7:20 + 8:50 + 6:15 = 22:25, i.e. 22.42 h.

How to add hours and minutes without errors

The most common error when adding time is treating minutes as decimal: 1 h 45 min + 2 h 30 min isnot"3.75 + …" in memory, only 105 min + 150 min = 255 min =4 h 15 min. The calculator does it for you: you enter any number of time intervals (hours:minutes) and you get the result in three formats - hh:mm, total minutes andin the decimal form(4.25 h), which is required by spreadsheets, invoices and T&A systems.

MinutesDecimalMinutesDecimal
15 min0.25 h40 min0.67 h
20 min0.33 h45 min0.75 h
30 min0.50 h50 min0.83 h

Typical applications

Total working hours per week to be settled with the client (e.g. 7:45 + 8:10 + 6:50 + 8:00 + 7:30 = 38 h 15 min = 38.25 h), total recording/editing time, training time in the running plan, planning travel with transfers. Subtraction also works: subtract start and break times from the end time - this is exactly how you calculate your daily wage. The full settlement of working time with overtime can be found in thehour calculator, and the summation of many intervals from-to in thehour counter.

Full table for converting minutes to decimal notation

For settlements with an hourly rate, it is convenient to have a converter at hand every 5 minutes. The formula is simple:minutes ÷ 60. Here is the entire range of one hour:

MinutesDecimalMinutesDecimalMinutesDecimal
5 min0.08 h25 min0.42 h45 min0.75 h
10 min0.17 h30 min0.50 h50 min0.83 h
15 min0.25 h35 min0.58 h55 min0.92 h
20 min0.33 h40 min0.67 h60 min1.00 h

Example of hourly invoice settlement.Let's assume a rate of PLN 80/h. Weekly hours worked: Monday 7:25, Tuesday 6:50, Wednesday 8:10, Thursday 5:40, Friday 7:15. The sum is35 h 20 min, or in decimal35.33 h(20 min = 0.33 h). Invoice value: PLN 35.33 × PLN 80 =PLN 2,826.40. If someone made a mistake and counted "35.20" instead of 35.33, the invoice would be understated by approximately PLN 10 - and this error increases every week. The calculator immediately gives the sum in decimal notation, so just multiply it by the rate.
