What does the vocal range calculator do?
The tool combines the fundamentals ofmusical acoustics i vocal theory. After entering or recording extreme sounds (lowest –min note, highest –max note), the calculator:
- recognizes the names of the sounds (e.g. E2, G4, C6) and theirfrequencies[Hz],
- calculates therange ofin semitones and octaves,
- estimatestessitura- the middle zone of comfortable singing,
- proposesvoice classificationbased on the given thresholds (reference range),
- suggestssongs and keysthat may be within your range.
How to use the calculator?
- Warm up your voice (scales, glissandos, gentle sirens). Never test the scope cold.
- Determine thelowest notethat you can sing clearly and steadily (without a whisper).
- Determinethe highest note, maintaining the correct timbre and intonation.
- Enter sounds (e.g. A2 and E5) or use the microphone input (if the tool supports it).

Formulas and acoustics – where do frequencies come from?
Standard A4 = 440 Hz. The frequency of any sound in an evenly tempered tuning is calculated by the formula:
f(n) = 440 × 2^((n − 69) / 12)
wherenis the key number in MIDI numbering (A4 = 69). The calculator automatically convertsnotes → Hzand vice versa. For example: C4 ≈ 261.63 Hz, E4 ≈ 329.63 Hz, A3 = 220 Hz.
Types of voices - approximate ranges
Below are sample ranges (often found in choirs and music education). Remember: this is an indicative framework - the final classification is determined by thesinging teacher, taking into account timbre,passaggi(places of register transitions), volume and tessitura.

Range is not the same as tessitura. You can "touch" high C, but your tessitura (area of comfortable singing) may end lower - and this often determines the selection of roles or key.
What influences the result?
- Warm-up:cold voice will show a narrower range.
- Intonation and timbre:what counts ispuresound, not a squeak or a whisper.
- Breathing technique:breathing support stabilizes the top and bottom of the scale.
- Room acoustics and microphone:echoes and noise can distort the measurement via the audio input.
Usage examples
Beginning vocalist
User gains E2–F4. The calculator suggests "bass/baritone (limit)", suggests exercises expanding the treble and the repertoire in the keys of F-A major with a comfortable tessitura A2-D4.
A vocalist with experience
Range B3–C6, with comfortable singing around E4–B5. The calculator suggests "soprano with mezzo-soprano tessitura", advises transposing songs to the key of G-A major for an acoustic concert.

Will the calculator "100%" determine my voice type?
This is a guideline, not a diagnosis. The classification is determined by the singing teacher after long-term observation of timbre, tessitura and passaggi.
Can I use it with my phone?
Yes – the tool works in the browser. Microphone input is best done in a quiet room.
Does the result depend on tuning (A4 ≠ 440 Hz)?
By default we use 440 Hz. If the tool offers a reference change (e.g. 442 Hz), the conversion will take into account the new standard.
What about the entertainment repertoire?
The scope and tessitura are universal. The calculator will also help you choose the key for pop, rock, gospel or musical.
Can I save the result?
Usually yes - the calculation history is stored locally in the browser (localStorage), so you can easily go back to the measurement.
Practical practice tips
- Practice scales from the middle of the tessitura, then extend them by 1-2 semitones.
- Use simple syllables (mi, ma, no, nu) and a half-open vocal "smile".
