The recruitment process for first-cycle studies and long-cycle master's studies in Poland is based mainly on the results obtained in the high school leaving examination. Each higher education institution (universities, polytechnics, medical and economic academies) has full autonomy in establishing its own rules for converting high school leaving exam grades into recruitment points. This means that the same high school leaving exam result (e.g. 80% in advanced mathematics) may give a completely different number of points when recruiting for the University of Warsaw and for the Warsaw University of Technology or the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. The key to success is detailed knowledge of the so-called recruitment formulas and weights assigned to individual subjects.

How are recruitment points from the high school leaving exam calculated?
Usually, the percentage result obtained in the Matura exam is converted in the ratio of 1% = 1 point (or a fraction of a point depending on the weight). The main rules are:
- Matura exam at the basic level:Most often it has less importance in recruitment (the coefficient is usually from 0.1 to 0.5) or is not taken into account at all in popular fields of study.
- Matura exam at the advanced level:It is the main pillar of recruitment. The coefficient for extensions is usually 1.0 or even higher (e.g. 2.0 in some polytechnic fields).
- Compulsory and additional subjects:Universities create baskets of subjects. For technical fields, points are awarded for mathematics, physics or computer science. For humanities - Polish language, history or social studies.

How to calculate university admissions points?
You should check the recruitment rules (so-called recruitment resolution) for the selected field of study at a given university. Percentage results in selected Matura subjects are multiplied by appropriate coefficients (weights) provided by the university and then added up.
What are point thresholds?
The point threshold is the minimum number of points obtained by the last person qualified for a given field of study in last year's recruitment process. The thresholds change every year depending on the difficulty level of the final exams and the number of applicants.
Do oral exam results count in university admissions?
In the vast majority of fields of study, the results of oral high school leaving examinations (in Polish and a foreign language) are not taken into account when calculating the recruitment rate.
What is the difference between university and polytechnic recruitment?
Polytechnics emphasize exact subjects (mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry) and often use complex formulas with limits on the maximum number of points (e.g. up to 225 or 1000). Universities are more likely to use a simple weighting system for humanities and science subjects.
What should I do if my high school final exam result is exactly the same as the point threshold from last year?
