Wet Bulb Temperature Calculator - Psychrometer, Dew Point and Humidity

This tool calculateswet bulb temperature (Tw), dew point (Td)orrelative humidity (RH)depending on the mode selected. Based on the equations Magnus-Tetens and psychrometric evaporation equation, the calculator enables accurate conversions for atmospheric and laboratory conditions.

meteorology psychrometry humidity dew point wet thermometer

Calculator operating modes

  • tw_trh– calculates Twfrom temperature T, humidity RH and pressure p.
  • tw_ttd– calculates Twfrom temperature T, dew point Tdand pressure p.
  • rh_ttw– calculates relative humidity from temperature T and Tw.

Each mode uses an iterative algorithm that adjusts the water vapor saturation equation and the evaporation coefficient depending on the atmospheric pressure.

Psychrometric formulas

1. Saturated water vapor pressure

e_s = 6.112 · exp[(17.62 · T) / (243.12 + T)]

whereT– temperature in °C,e_sin hPa

2. Water vapor pressure from humidity

e = e_s(T) · RH / 100

3. Psychrometric equation (Murray, 1967)

T - T_w = (A · p) · (T - T_w) / (L / (R_v · T_w²))

whereL– heat of vaporization,R_v– gas constant of water vapor,A– pressure correction factor.

Input data

Size Symbol Unit
Air temperature T °C
Relative humidity RH %
Dew point Td °C
Wet bulb temperature Tw °C
Atmospheric pressure p hPa

Application examples

Example 1 - tw_trh mode

  • T = 30°C
  • RH = 60%
  • p = 1013 hPa

e_s = 42.4 hPa, e = 25.4 hPa Result:Tw≈ 23.5°C

Example 2 – rh_ttw mode

  • T = 25°C
  • Tw= 20°C

RH ≈ 73%, Td≈ 19.3°C, e = 22.4 hPa

Interpretation of the results

The wet bulb temperatureTwis always lower than the air temperatureT(unless the air is fully saturated, then T = Tw= Td). The difference T − Twreflects the intensity of evaporation and indirectly determines the water vapor content in the air.

Practical applications

  • Thermal comfort measurement (WBGT index)
  • Microclimate analysis and evaporative cooling
  • Control of industrial and agricultural processes
  • Calibration of psychrometers and humidity sensors

FAQ

What is temperature wet bulb?

This is the temperature to which air cools when water evaporates at constant pressure. It corresponds to the physical process of adiabatic cooling.

Why is Twlower than T?

Evaporation absorbs heat, so the temperature of the water surface decreases until the water vapor reaches equilibrium with its surroundings.

Does Twdepend on pressure?

Yes, but the effect is small in the range of 950–1050 hPa. The calculator takes this correction into account for precise results.

Summary

The wet bulb temperature calculator is based on the principles of psychrometry. It allows you to calculate air parameters such as humidity, dew point and wet bulb temperature for various atmospheric conditions. Useful in meteorology, HVAC, agriculture and thermo-humidity analyses.
