Building a roof and choosing the appropriate covering is one of the most expensive decisions when building a single-family house. Ceramic or concrete (cement) roof tiles are among the most durable and aesthetic materials, but their purchase requires careful calculation. If you buy too few roof tiles, you risk downtime for the roofing team and additional transport costs. Moreover, roof tiles from another production batch may differ slightly in the shade of dye (batch code). On the other hand, excess material is a waste of the budget. How to calculate the number of tiles for a roof? Step-by-step procedure

Calculation of the demand for roof tiles consists of several stages:

  1. Calculation of the roof surface area (m²):Determine the surface area of ​​all roof slopes (gable, envelope or multi-slope) based on architectural projections or physical measurements of the roof truss.
  2. Determination of roof tile efficiency (pcs/m²):Each roof tile model has its own unique dimensions and the so-called nominal consumption per m². It usually ranges from 9 pieces (for modern large-format roof tiles) to up to 40 pieces (for small plain roof tiles arranged in a scale or lacing pattern). You will find these data in the product's technical data sheet.
  3. Taking into account the allowance for waste (inventory):When laying the roof, roofers must cut roof tiles in valleys (confluences of slopes), around chimneys, roof windows and in corners. This generates waste. The amount of the reserve depends on the complexity of the roof:
    • Simple roof (gable):The reserve is approx. 3 - 5%.
    • Complicated roof (multi-slope, with dormers):The reserve should be increased to 10 - 15% due to the large number of cuts.

How to calculate the number of roof tiles for a roof with an area of ​​e.g. 150 m²?

First, check the efficiency of the selected roof tile model in the technical data sheet (e.g. 10 pcs/m²). Multiply the roof area by the efficiency: 150 m² · 10 pcs./m² = 1,500 pieces of basic (slope) roof tiles. Then add allowance for trimmings (e.g. 5% for a gable roof): 1500 · 1.05 = 1575 pieces. Finally, you need to buy accessories (ridge tiles, wind braces), which are calculated from the running meters of the edges.

How much stock of roof tiles should be added to the cuts for the envelope roof?

The envelope roof (hipped) has four sloping edges (ridges) meeting at the ridge. This requires a large number of diagonal cuts of the roof tiles along the corners. For this reason, the allowance for cuttings should range from 10% to even 15%, depending on the slope angle.

What is the difference between ceramic tiles and concrete (cement) tiles?

Ceramic roof tiles are made of fired clay, are more durable (its service life is estimated at over 100 years), have lower water absorption, but are more expensive. Concrete roof tiles are made from a mixture of sand, cement and water, they are cheaper, slightly lighter, but they have a shorter service life (approx. 50-70 years) and may become covered with moss faster if they are not covered with a special acrylic coating.

How to calculate the required number of roof ridge tiles?

Ridge tiles are used to finish the ridge (ridge) of the roof. To calculate their number, measure the total length of the horizontal ridge and sloping corners in linear meters. Divide this length by the length of coverage of one ridge tile (these data can be found in the product card, usually 1 ridge tile covers approx. 30-35 cm, so you need approx. 3 ridge tiles per linear meter).

What are edge tiles (wind tiles) and how many do I need?

The extreme roof tiles (right and left) are used for aesthetic and tight finishing of the side edges of the roof (gables). It protects the roof from being torn off by strong winds. To calculate their number, measure the total length of all side edges of the roof and divide it by the covering height of a single roof tile (usually approx. 30-34 cm).
