Why do we most often get confused in square meters?

The biggest mistake is treating m² as "bare" mathematics, without taking into account the realities of work. In practice, what counts are:cuts(waste),layout(e.g. herringbone/diagonal),wall curvatures, niches and recesses, window and door openingsand that that the material is sold in packages. That's why a good calculator does not end with "length × width" - it only provides a result ready for purchasing decisions.

Where does the "missing 2 m²" come from?

Mostly with taunts. The more corners, recesses and passages, the more waste. The second reason is the layout - a diagonal or herringbone layout can significantly increase demand. The third reason is the curvatures and "missing" of the actual dimensions after plasters and screeds.

If the material has production series/batches (e.g. tiles), it is better to buy it immediately with a spare than to order it later with another batch.

How to calculate m² for the most popular cases?

Below are simple patterns and tips. The calculator does it automatically, but it is worth understanding where the result comes from - then you will spot typos and incorrect units faster.

RECTANGLE

Area= length × width

Perimeter= 2 × (length + width)

WALL

Area= length × height − holes

Openings= sum (width × height) of windows/doors

CIRCLE

Area= π × r²

Perimeter= 2 × π × r

TRIANGLE

Area= 0.5 × base × height
