How the monitor distance calculator works - step by step

Under the hood, the calculator performs some typical "engineering" calculations, but the interface remains simple. You enter the data from the box or monitor specifications, and the module itself converts them intospecific values ​​in centimeters. What do each calculator result mean?

This is the most important result at the top of the right panel. It is determined as a compromise between three criteria:

  • "Retina" point- as close as possible so that the image is as sharp as possible, but without visible pixels,
  • FOV 30°- a more or less calm, office viewing angle in which you can see the entire screen at one glance,
  • FOV 40°– a more "cinematic" and immersive viewing angle, recommended e.g. by recommendations like THX.

The recommended distance is always between FOV 30° and 40° and is not less than the distance at which you can no longer see individual pixels. This makes the resultuseful both ergonomically and visually.

Retina dot, PPI and dot size

The second group of results tells youhow dense theimage is on your monitor:

  • PPI- the higher the value, the more detail there is the same surface and later you will see individual pixels.
  • Spot size (pixel pitch)– pixel pitch in millimeters. Smaller spot = sharper image at the same distance.
  • "Retina" point- the distance in centimeters from which, with typical eyesight, the boundaries of individual pixels are no longer distinguishable.

You can think of these values ​​as ameasure of the quality and sharpness of thescreen. Two monitors with the same diagonal but different resolution will give very different PPI results, which the calculator shows clearly.

30° and 40° FOV – when will you need each of them?

FOV (Field of View) determines how much of the field of view the screen occupies. The calculator provides two key values:

  • Distance for FOV 30°- a mild, rather office scenario: the screen does not dominate the field of view, which favors working with text, code or spreadsheets.
  • Distance for 40° FOV– a more “cinematic” setting. At this value, the screen fills most of the field of view and favorsimmersion in games, movies and video editing.

In practice, you can use these values ​​​​as "ranges": closer to FOV 40°, when you want maximum immersion in the action, closer to FOV 30°, when the priority is to comfortably view a large amount of content.
