Other tools you may find usefulHow to Use the Shopify Dropshipping Profit Calculator
The Shopify dropshipping profit calculator shows how much you keep from a single order. Fill in four fields and see your result instantly.
- Price – the amount the customer pays (default $39.99).
- Cost + shipping – what you pay the supplier, including shipping (default $14).
- Ad / order – the average cost of getting one order (default $9).
- Processing % – the percentage rate for the payment fee (default 2.9).
After you enter these values, you get three results: Fees, Profit / order, and Margin. With the default values, the calculator shows $1.46 in fees, $15.53 in profit, and a 38.84% margin. The calculation runs locally in your browser, so you do not need to send or save anything, and you can enter your own rates to calculate in any currency.
How to Set Your Price, Product Cost, Shipping, and Ad Budget per Order
The numbers you enter determine whether the result makes sense. Go through each item in order.
- Price. Start with the amount the customer actually pays, including discounts and free shipping built into the price. If you sell the same product in several variants, calculate each one separately.
- Cost + shipping. Enter your full cost: the supplier purchase plus shipping to the customer. If the supplier charges a fulfillment or packaging fee, add it here.
- Ad / order. This is not your daily budget, but the average cost of getting one order. Calculate it simply: ad spend ÷ number of orders in that period.
- Processing %. Enter the payment fee rate charged by your processor. The default is 2.9—change it to your own rate and check current pricing.
It is worth calculating several scenarios: a conservative version, a realistic one, and one where ad costs rise. You can then see the price and cost per acquisition at which the business still works.
Understanding Payment Fees and Margin in Shopify
In the calculator, Fees mean only the payment fee. It is calculated as: payment fee = price × percentage rate ÷ 100 + $0.30. The $0.30 is a fixed amount added to every order, and you can change the percentage rate—it is 2.9 by default. Check your payment provider's current pricing, because rates change.
Margin is the share of profit in the price: margin = profit ÷ price × 100%. With the default values, it breaks down like this:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Price | $39.99 |
| Cost + shipping | -$14.00 |
| Ad / order | -$9.00 |
| Payment fee | -$1.46 |
| Profit / order | $15.53 |
| Margin | 38.84% |
A 38.84% margin means that for every dollar the customer pays, you keep just under 39 cents in profit on that order. It is a useful measure, but it does not yet tell you whether the whole store is profitable—that requires your other business costs.
How to Increase Profit and Margin in Dropshipping
Profit grows in two directions: you increase revenue per order or reduce costs. Usually a combination of both works best.
- Raise the price and check the effect. A small increase can clearly improve margin, especially when the payment fee and ad cost stay the same.
- Negotiate your supplier cost. At higher volumes, ask for a better price or cheaper shipping—every dollar saved goes straight to profit.
- Increase order value. Bundles, add-ons, and upsells raise the cart total, and your ad cost is spread over a larger amount.
- Improve ad performance. Better audience targeting and clear ad creative lower your average cost per order.
- Reduce returns. Accurate descriptions, good photos, and realistic delivery times reduce returns that eat into margin.
After every change, return to the calculator and compare the results. The 38.84% margin from the default example is a convenient benchmark—if it increases after your adjustments, you are moving in the right direction.
Limitations and What the Calculator Does Not Include
The calculator estimates profit per order and relies on the four values you enter. The result is only as accurate as your data—and by nature it does not cover everything.
- It does not add fixed store costs: platform subscription, app fees, email marketing tools, or accounting.
- It does not include taxes, duties, or customs handling costs.
- It does not calculate costs for returns, exchanges, chargebacks, or reshipping.
- It does not include other payment processor fees beyond the percentage and fixed amount you enter—check current pricing and add them manually.
- It does not convert currencies or track exchange rates.
- It does not forecast monthly or yearly sales, because it shows only one order.
Treat the result as an approximate starting point for decisions, not a guarantee of any specific earnings. Enter your own current rates to get closer to your store's reality, and remember that prices, shipping costs, and payment terms change over time.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much profit is left on one Shopify dropshipping order?
It depends on the price, product cost with shipping, ad cost, and payment fee. With the calculator defaults—price $39.99, cost with shipping $14, ad cost $9, and a 2.9% rate—you keep $15.53 in profit, which gives a 38.84% margin.
How do I calculate margin on a product?
Margin is profit divided by price, multiplied by 100%. You calculate profit by subtracting product cost with shipping, ad cost per order, and payment fee from the price.
Does the calculator include ad budget?
Yes. In the Ad / order field, enter the average cost of getting one order. It is best to calculate it from real data: divide ad spend by the number of orders from the same period.
What fees does the calculator add?
Only the payment fee: a percentage of the price plus a fixed $0.30. Other costs, such as platform subscription, apps, or taxes, you need to account for yourself.
Can I calculate in a currency other than dollars?
Yes. The amounts in the tool use the currency shown by the tool, US dollars by default, but you can enter your own prices and rates to calculate in any currency.
Is the result the exact profit that will hit my bank account?
It is an estimated profit per order based on the data you enter. To get closer to the amount that actually remains in the business, add subscriptions, apps, taxes, returns, and other store costs.
