How to Calculate Average Domestic and International Shipping Cost

Average shipping cost is a weighted average. It takes into account what share of orders are domestic and what share are international. The formula in simplified form is:

You enter shares as percentages, but they are used as portions of the whole in the calculation. The domestic share is 100% minus the international share. For the default values, it looks like this:

Average calculation: 4.9 × 0.7 + 14.5 × 0.3 = 3.43 + 4.35 = 7.78. The second result is the same average multiplied by a fixed 1.1, or 10%. For the default data, this gives $8.56.

If you have several different domestic or international rates, you can average them first or calculate each order group separately. The calculator accepts one domestic rate and one international rate.

Whether and When to Include Shipping in the Product Price and What +10% Means

You can handle shipping in two ways: charge it separately to the customer or include it in the product price. If the customer sees a separate delivery cost, the first calculator result helps you check whether your rates cover the average shipping cost. If you offer free shipping, the second result suggests how much to add to the product price so you do not lose money on delivery on average.

The second result, Add to product price (+10%), is the average shipping cost plus 10%. This is not an Etsy fee or tax. It is a simple buffer you can use as a starting point. It can help cover small differences: larger packaging, extra protection, shipping handling, or a carrier rate change.

When is it worth including shipping in the price? When you want to show the customer one clear price. When most competitors in your category offer free delivery. When you prefer to avoid surprises at checkout. When can you leave shipping separate? When customers are used to paying it, when delivery costs vary widely between countries, or when you want your product price to be lower in search.

Keep in mind that +10% is only the value entered in the calculator. You may decide that a different buffer is better for your shop. However, the calculator shows a fixed result for the weighted average, so it does not replace a full pricing strategy decision.

What Etsy Fees and Extra Costs Affect Shipping

The final shipping cost is not affected only by the carrier rate. Etsy may charge various selling-related fees, such as listing fees, transaction fees, payment processing fees, advertising or promoted listing fees, and currency conversion fees. Their amount and scope depend on your region, selling plan, and the platform's current pricing. Always check current rates in Etsy's official fee schedule.

Extra costs to include:

• packaging materials: box, envelope, filler, tape, label,
• time and shipping handling, meaning preparing the package and contacting the customer,
• shipping insurance, tracking, or delivery confirmation,
• returns, reshipments, and situations where the package comes back to you,
• taxes, customs, and import fees on the customer's or seller's side,
• exchange-rate differences if you settle in a different currency than the sale currency.
