How to Use the Square Fee Calculator

The Square fee calculator answers one question: how much of a transaction remains after the fee is deducted. You fill in three fields.

  • Amount – the transaction value; default 50.
  • Rate % – the percentage part of the fee; default 2.6.
  • Fixed – the fixed fee per transaction; default 0.1.

The fee is calculated as: amount times percentage rate / 100 + fixed fee. For the default values, that works out as follows: 50 times 2.6 / 100 = 1.30, and 1.30 + 0.10 = 1.40. That is the Fee line. The second line is You receive, which is the amount minus the calculated fee: 50 - 1.40 = 48.60.

Results update immediately when you change any number. By default, amounts are shown in US dollars because that is the currency of the market where Square operates. Enter your own rates and amounts if you settle in another currency – the calculator works with the numbers you provide and does not convert currencies.

The 2.6% and $0.10 rates are starting values only. Overwrite them with the rates that apply to your sales after checking current Square pricing for your country and payment type. All calculations run locally in your browser – the amounts you enter are not sent or stored anywhere. The tool is free and does not require an account.

Square Rates for Online and In-Person Payments

Square does not use one rate for every transaction. Online sales are often priced differently from payments accepted in person – on a terminal, reader, or point of sale. There are also differences between countries and between card types.

That is why the calculator does not have a hard-coded rate. You can change the Rate % and Fixed fields freely, and the numbers visible when you open the page are only a starting point. You will find current rates for your market and sales channel in Square's pricing.

SituationWhat to enter in the calculator
Online sales – store, invoice, remote paymentpercentage and fixed rate for remote payments, according to current pricing
In-person sales – terminal, reader, point of salerate for in-person transactions, according to current pricing
Custom scenario or negotiated termsany numbers you want to check

If you sell through several channels, calculate each one separately – once with the online rate and once with the in-person payment rate. You will then see how much of a transaction at a given value remains in each case.

Keep in mind that rates are indicative and change with Square's pricing. Before you calculate margin or set a price, get the current numbers from Square and enter those.

Additional Square Fees (International Cards, Manually Entered Payments, ACH)

The formula used by the calculator covers two components: a percentage of the transaction amount and a fixed fee per transaction. That is the most common way card payments are priced, but it is not the only cost that may appear on your statement.

Square applies separate terms to some payment types. These include international cards, manually entered payments, where you do not read the card, and bank transfers known as ACH. Such transactions may be priced at a different rate than a standard card payment.

  • International cards – a card issued outside the country of sale may be subject to different terms.
  • Manually entered payments – when you enter the card details yourself instead of reading the card, the fee may be different.
  • ACH and bank transfers – payments without a card are a separate mechanism with separate terms.
  • Fees not tied to a transaction – for example, monthly plan fees, hardware, or additional services.

This page does not list specific amounts or thresholds here because they depend on the market, card type, and agreement, and pricing is updated regularly. Check them directly in current Square pricing.

How can you use this in practice? If you know an additional fee applies to your transaction, treat the calculator result as a starting point and add that fee manually. You will then see a fuller picture of the cost.

How to Calculate the Gross Amount to Receive a Target Net Amount

The calculator works in one direction: from the amount the customer pays to the amount that remains with you. If you think in reverse and want to set a price so that exactly a certain sum remains after the fee, you need to calculate the transaction amount yourself.

The formula is simple: gross amount = (net amount + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage rate / 100).

Where does it come from? The fee is amount times rate / 100 plus the fixed fee, and the net amount is the gross amount minus the fee. After rearranging that equation, you get the formula above.

See it with the default values, 2.6% and $0.10. Suppose you want $48.60 to remain after the fee is deducted. You calculate: (48.60 + 0.10) / (1 - 0.026) = 48.70 / 0.974 = 50. The amount 50 is exactly the value you enter in the calculator, and the You receive result shows $48.60. The fee in this case is $1.40.

For other rates, use your own numbers – first add the fixed fee to the net amount, then divide the result by one minus the percentage rate written as a decimal (2.6% is 0.026).

Keep in mind that the formula covers only the two fee components. If additional costs apply to the transaction, as described above, add them separately. Otherwise, you will set a price that does not cover the full cost.

Limitations and What the Tool Does Not Calculate

The Square fee calculator is a quick estimating tool. It calculates only what you enter, and it does not replace full business accounting. Here is what you will not find in it.

  • Taxes – VAT, income tax, sales tax, or other fiscal charges. The calculator shows only the transaction fee and the amount that remains from it.
  • Current rates and pricing – the tool does not pull rates from any source. You enter them yourself, so the result depends on the data you provide.
  • Additional fees – international cards, manually entered payments, ACH, monthly fees, hardware, or additional services.
  • Currency exchange rates and conversions – you calculate in one currency that you choose by entering amounts. The tool does not convert currencies.
  • Refunds, chargebacks, and adjustments – they do not affect the result, although in practice they cost the seller.
  • Costs beyond processor fees – shipping, marketplace commissions, advertising, packaging, customer service.
  • Individual terms – negotiated rates, promotions, new-seller discounts, or terms from a specific agreement.

When is the result only an estimate? When the rates you enter differ from those that actually apply to you, and when costs outside the formula apply to the transaction. With the default 2.6% and $0.10 for an amount of $50, the calculator shows a fee of $1.40 and an amount of $48.60 – and that is the correct result for those numbers.

The best way to work: take current Square pricing for your market, copy the applicable rates from it, and then check several typical amounts from your sales. You will see how much of your revenue stays with you and how much goes to fees. For a complete calculation, you will still need taxes and other costs – calculate those separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Square's transaction fee?

It depends on the market, sales channel, and payment type, so check current rates in Square's pricing. The calculator does not have hard-coded rates – you enter your own and immediately see the fee and the amount that remains.

How do I calculate Square's fee on $50?

Enter 50 in the Amount field and leave the other fields at their default values, 2.6 and 0.1. The calculator will calculate a fee of $1.40 and show that you receive $48.60. If your rates are different, just change them.

What rate should I enter in the Square fee calculator?

The rate that applies to your transaction according to current Square pricing – it may be different for online sales than for payments accepted in person. The values 2.6 and 0.1 are only a starting point that you can overwrite.

Does the calculator include taxes and additional fees?

No. The tool calculates only the transaction fee using the percentage and fixed-amount formula, plus the amount that remains after it is deducted. Add taxes, international card fees, manually entered payment fees, or ACH fees separately.

How do I calculate the gross amount to receive a target net amount?

Calculate it as: gross amount = (net amount + fixed fee) / (1 - percentage rate / 100). For the default rates and a net amount of $48.60, the result is $50, which you can verify in the calculator.

Can I calculate in a currency other than dollars?

Yes. Enter the amount and rates in the currency you use, and the calculator will work with those numbers. Remember that it does not convert currencies, so account for exchange rates outside the tool.

Square rates are indicative and depend on country, transaction type, and agreement — check current Square pricing before using.
