Origin, Greek etymology and scientific meaning of the name Methodius
The name Methodius is ofGreek origin. It is directly derived from the Greek word"Methodios", which was formed from the noun"methodos". The Greek word *methodos* consists of two parts: *meta* (behind, according to, along) and *hodos* (way, path, way). Literally, *methodos* means "study", "search", "mode of conduct" or "systematicity". Hence the name Methodius is translated as"a man with an ordered way of acting", "a researcher of roads", "a systematic man"or"a methodical scientist".
In the European and Slavic tradition, this name gained immortal status thanks to the activities of Saint Methodius (ca. 815–885), who, together with his younger brother, Saint Cyril (Constantine), led Christianization missions among the Slavs in the Great Moravian State. Saint Before joining the monastery in Bithynia, Methodius was a Byzantine provincial administrator (archon) in Macedonia, which developed in him extraordinary diplomatic and organizational skills. Saints Cyril and Methodius are considered the fathers of Slavic writing - they created the Glagolitic alphabet, the first Slavic alphabet, and translated the Holy Scripture into the Old Church Slavonic language. For this reason, St. Methodius is revered as the patron saint of translators, linguists, teachers and an advocate of the cultural unity of Europe. In Poland, this name has been recorded since the Middle Ages, although it has always been a rare and elite name, symbolizing high education, erudition and loyalty to humanistic values.
The meaning of the name Methodius in the history of Christianity, Slavic literature and theology
In the history of Christianity and literature, the figure of Saint Methodius played a fundamental role. As Archbishop of Moravia and Pannonia, he had to face strong pressure from the Frankish clergy, who opposed the introduction of the Slavic language into the liturgy. Methodius showed extraordinary courage, patience and consistency, traveling to Rome three times to obtain the approval of subsequent popes for Slavic liturgical books. Despite being imprisoned in the monastery in Ellwangen by his opponents, he did not give up defending the rights of the Slavs to their own linguistic and cultural identity. This name also appears in the history of other outstanding theologians - e.g. Saint. Methodius of Olympus (3rd/4th century), early Christian writer, author of the famous treatise "The Feast of the Ten Virgins", in which he argued with Origen's views. In Polish tradition, this name is associated with noble stubbornness, broad intellectual horizons, love for foreign languages and organizational skills on an international scale.
