Name days are the custom of solemnly celebrating the day of the patron assigned to a given name in the calendar. This tradition has deep roots in Christian culture and is associated with the liturgical commemoration of the saints and blesseds of the Catholic Church. In Poland, for centuries, name days were treated as a more important holiday than birthdays - publicly announcing the name day in calendars made it easier to make wishes without having to remember the exact date of birth of a given person. Although nowadays, under the influence of Western culture, younger generations are more willing to celebrate birthdays, name days still remain an important element of Polish cultural identity, especially in regions such as Greater Poland, Silesia and Kashubia.
Our large, interactive online name day calendar contains a complete database of names and dates assigned to every day of the year. The tool allows you to quickly find the name day of a loved one or check who is celebrating their name day today.
How to determine the correct name day date?
Many names (e.g. Jan, Anna, Piotr, Maria) appear in the calendar many times (even a dozen or so times a year). The traditional Polish rule determining when a given person should celebrate their name day is as follows:
Name day is celebrated on the first day in the calendar falling immediately after the person's birthday.
For example, if John was born on May 10, he should celebrate his name day on May 24 (John's closest name day after his birth), and not, for example, June 24 or December 27, which are also John's days in the calendar.
