What time is it in Japan? Time in the Land of the Rising Sun (JST)

Are you planning a trip to Tokyo, want to contact a business partner from Osaka, or maybe you just follow your favorite streamer from Kyoto? The first thing you need to determine is the current local time in Japan. Unlike many Western countries, Japan is extremely simple in managing time zones. The entire country is in one time zone and does not change between summer and winter time. Our simple and free online tool allows you to instantly check what time it is now in Japan and easily calculate the time difference with Poland.

Below you will find a comprehensive article describing the specifics of time in Japan, its history, the lack of daylight saving time (DST), and practical tips on how to deal with jet lag after traveling to the Far East.

Japan time zone: JST (Japan Standard Time)

The official time in Japan is called **Japan Standard Time (JST)** and is referred to in relation to Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as:

\[ \text{Japan} = \text{UTC} + 9 \]

This means that watches in Japan indicate a time 9 hours later than the time of the Prime Meridian (Greenwich). For comparison, Poland is located in the UTC+1 zone in the winter, which means an 8-hour difference, and in the UTC+2 zone in the summer, which means a 7-hour difference.

Time difference between Poland and Japan

Due to the fact that in Poland we change the time from winter to summer and vice versa twice a year, the time difference between our country and Japan varies throughout the year. The mathematical formulas for calculating the time in Japan based on the time in Poland are as follows:

1. During winter time in Poland (from the last Sunday in October to the last Sunday in March):

\[ T_{\text{Japan}} = T_{\text{Poland}} + 8 \]

For example, when the time in Warsaw is 09:00 in the morning in December, in Tokyo it is already 17:00 in the afternoon on the same day.

2. During summer time in Poland (from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October):

\[ T_{\text{Japan}} = T_{\text{Poland}} + 7 \]

For example, when in Warsaw it is 09:00 in the morning in July, in Tokyo it is 16:00 after noon.

Why is there no Daylight Saving Time in Japan?

The lack of summer and winter time changes in Japan is a topic with an interesting historical and political background. In the past, and more precisely after World War II under American occupation (1948–1951), Japan introduced summer time (DST) following the example of Western countries. However, this solution met with enormous public resistance. Japanese farmers complained about animals' circadian rhythm disturbances, and factory workers complained about working longer hours in the heat because the sun was shining until late in the evening. In 1952, after Japan regained full sovereignty, the parliament immediately withdrew daylight saving time.

In recent decades, the topic of DST has returned (including during the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2020 in order to avoid the morning heat for marathon runners), but ultimately the government did not decide to restore it. The Japanese value the constancy and stability of local government time throughout the year.

How to deal with time difference and jet lag after traveling to Japan?

  1. Adjust your sleep before traveling:A few days before your flight to Japan, start going to bed 1-2 hours earlier than usual. Since you are traveling east, your body will have to "speed up" its biological clock.
  2. Drink plenty of water:Dehydration during a long flight (usually lasting 11 to 15 hours with layovers) drastically increases the symptoms of fatigue and jet lag.
  3. Change the time on your phone on the plane:As soon as you board the plane, set your watch to Japanese time. This will help your psyche switch more quickly to the new rhythm of the day.
  4. Take advantage of the sunlight:Once you land in Tokyo, spend as much time outside in the sunlight as possible. This helps stop melatonin production and signals your body that it's daytime.
  5. Avoid naps during the first day:Although you may be very tired upon arrival, try to stay awake until at least 8:00-9:00 p.m. local time.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Does Japan have more than one time zone?

No. Even though Japan is an island country stretching for nearly 3,000 kilometers (from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south), its entire administrative area is located in one time zone - Japan Standard Time (JST). This means that whether you are in Sapporo, Tokyo or Fukuoka, the time will be exactly the same on your watch.

What is the time difference between Japan and London (GMT)?

Since London is in the Greenwich time zone (GMT/UTC+0 in winter, BST/UTC+1 in summer), the time difference is: +9 hours in winter and +8 hours in summer. Japan is always ahead of British time.

Why don't the Japanese want to introduce daylight saving time?

Opponents of summer time in Japan point to negative health consequences (sleep disorders) and that, given the Japanese work culture (overtime), the introduction of a longer sunny day could result in employees returning home even later. Moreover, the costs of switching IT systems in such a technologically advanced country would be gigantic.

What time does the sun rise and set in Tokyo?

Due to the lack of daylight saving time and geographical location, the sun rises and sets relatively early in Japan. In June (during the summer solstice), sunrise in Tokyo occurs around 4:30 a.m. and sunset occurs around 7 p.m. In December, the sun rises around 6:45 a.m. and sets very early - before 4:30 p.m.

How does the time difference affect the Tokyo Stock Exchange?

The Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) is open from 09:00 to 15:00 local time (with a lunch break from 11:30 to 12:30). Translated to Polish time, the session in Tokyo starts at 01:00 (winter) or 02:00 (summer) at night and ends at 07:00 or 08:00 in the morning. Investors from Poland must therefore monitor the Asian market at night.
