Live clock in Moscow - current time in the capital of Russia

Moscow, as the capital of the largest country in the world in terms of area, is a key communication, economic and political hub in Eastern Europe. When planning a train trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway, contacting us by phone or following international events, accurate knowledge of the local time in Moscow is essential. Our precision live Moscow clock synchronizes in real time with NTP atomic time servers, showing accurate hours and minutes including seconds. Thanks to this, you can be sure that the time read is free from any delays.

Below you will find a description of the time zone in Moscow (MSK), the time change rules in Russia, its turbulent history and a comparison table with the time in Warsaw.

Moscow Time Zone (MSK) - Moscow time vs. Russian time zones

The official time zone for the Russian capital isMoscow Standard Time (MSK), which corresponds to the offsetUTC+3. It is worth remembering that the Russian Federation stretches through as many as 11 time zones - from Kaliningrad (UTC+2) in the west to Kamchatka (UTC+12) in the east. Moscow Time (MSK) serves as the reference time throughout Russia. It is used in Russian railway timetables (all long-distance trains, including Transsiberia, depart according to Moscow time, regardless of the local zone at the intermediate station) and in air and military navigation systems.

It is also worth mentioning that Moscow time is of great importance for logistics and travel planning. When you book a train ticket for the Trans-Siberian Railway (e.g. from Moscow to Vladivostok), you must remember that the tickets traditionally show Moscow time. This means that the train leaves Vladivostok at the time indicated on the clock in Moscow, although the time of day is completely different there (the difference is as much as 7 hours!). Similarly, in domestic aviation, flight schedules often refer directly to Moscow time, which requires passengers to be very vigilant when crossing subsequent time zone boundaries.

History of time changes in Russia - permanent standard time without DST

Time zone rules in Russia have undergone dynamic changes in recent decades. In 2011, then-President Dmitry Medvedev signed a law abolishing seasonal time changes and permanently introducing summer time (which for Moscow meant UTC+4). However, this decision caused a wave of criticism from citizens complaining about the lack of light in the morning in the winter (darkness sometimes lasted until 10:00 in the morning). As a result, in 2014, President Vladimir Putin signed an amendment to the law that permanently moved clocks back one hour. From now on, Moscow is permanently in theUTC+3zone and does not use summer time (DST) or winter time.

Geopolitical consequences of Moscow time

Moscow time is also used as a political tool in disputed or annexed regions. For example, after the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and in other parts of eastern Ukraine controlled by Russia, the local time was immediately changed from Kiev time (UTC+2 / summer UTC+3) to Moscow time (UTC+3 permanently). This immediate change was intended to symbolically and practically integrate these territories into the Russian state system and sever ties with Ukraine.

The influence of the MSK zone extends beyond the borders of Russia itself. In 2011, neighboring Belarus also abandoned summer and winter time changes, permanently adopting UTC+3. As a result, Minsk and Moscow have the same time all year round. A similar decision was made in 2024 by Kazakhstan, which unified the time throughout the country by introducing one UTC+5 zone, which simplified internal communication in this vast country, bringing it closer in time to the Moscow standard.

Railway and air logistics in Russia - a Moscow time (MSK) phenomenon

For travelers from Poland and other European countries, moving around Russia (especially using the legendary Trans-Siberian Railway) requires understanding a unique administrative phenomenon. Although the train travels over several days and crosses eight different time zones, all official train station timetables, passenger tickets and station clocks traditionally use only Moscow Time (MSK). This means that a passenger boarding the train in Vladivostok at 10:00 a.m. Moscow time must remember that the local time on the watch is already 5:00 p.m. This dual timekeeping system requires great discipline and constant concentration so as not to miss the train or get the wrong day of travel. In civil aviation, the situation is slightly different, as airports usually provide departure and arrival times according to the local time of a given zone, which, however, still requires passengers to constantly recalculate time differences when connecting flights via Moscow.

Time difference between Poland and Moscow – what does it look like in summer and winter?

The time difference between Warsaw and Moscow changes twice a year due to the fact that Poland changes its clocks and Russia does not:

  • During the winter period (from the end of October to the end of March):Standard time applies in Poland (CET – UTC+1). The time difference is then+2 hoursfor Moscow. When it is 12:00 in Poland, it is already 14:00 in Moscow.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What is the time difference between Poland and Moscow?

The time difference is +1 hour in summer (when UTC+2 summer time applies in Poland) and +2 hours in winter (when UTC+1 standard time applies in Poland). Moscow does not change time and uses the UTC+3 zone all year round.

Does Moscow change to summer and winter time?

No. Russia abandoned seasonal time changes in 2011. In 2014, winter time was permanently established there (UTC+3 for Moscow), which remains unchanged throughout the year.

How many time zones does Russia have and what are they called?

Russia has 11 time zones, marked from USZ1 (Kaliningrad Time, UTC+2) to VLAT/MAGT/PETT (Far Eastern zones, up to UTC+12). Moscow is in the second time zone (MSK, UTC+3).

What time is it in Kaliningrad and is it different from Moscow time?

Kaliningrad time is valid in the Kaliningrad Oblast (EET – UTC+2). This is an hour earlier than in Moscow. Interestingly, in the summer time in Kaliningrad is exactly the same as in Poland, while in the winter Kaliningrad is one hour ahead of Warsaw.

How does Moscow Time (MSK) affect rail transport schedules in Russia?

In accordance with many years of tradition, the train timetable at all stations in Russia (including the Trans-Siberian Railway) is based on Moscow time (MSK). Travelers must carefully monitor the local time at intermediate stations so as not to be late for a train departing according to the Moscow clock.
