The Moon Phase Calculator calculates which of the eight phases the Moon is in on the selected day and thepercent illumination of thedial. It also shows how many days are left until the next full moon and new moon. The calculations are based on the synodic month (29.53 days) counted from the known new moon.
Eight phases of the Moon
New moon → waxing crescent → first quarter → waxing hump → full moon → waning hump → last quarter → waning crescent. The entire cycle takes approximately 29.5 days.
Lunar cycle - 8 phases in 29.5 days
A complete cycle (lunation) lasts on average29 days 12 hours and 44 minutes. In order: new moon (Moon not visible), waxing crescent, first quarter (right half of the dial), waxing gibbous Moon, full moon, waning gibbous moon, last quarter (left half), waning crescent - and the new moon again. A simple trick to recognize from the sky: the Moon in the shape of the letterD - "fills"(increases), in the shape ofC - "regresses"(decreases).
Full Moon in 2026
Full Moon dates in 2026 (Polish time): January 3, February 1, March 3, April 2, May 1 andMay 31(the second time a month - the so-called blue moon), June 29, July 29, August 28, 26 September, October 26, November 24, December 24 (full moon on Christmas Eve!). The calculator will show the phase for any date - with the percentage of illumination on the dial and the age of the Moon in days.
What really depends on the phase of the Moon
Confirmed:sea tides(strongest at new and full moons, when the Sun and Moon work together), the brightness of the night sky (important for astrophotography - best observations at new moons) and... holiday dates (Easter is the first Sunday after the first spring full moon). However, the influence of the full moon on sleep, birth or behavior has not been scientifically confirmed - although research is still ongoing and gardening traditions (biodynamic calendar) have loyal supporters. You can check the zodiac sign from your date of birth inChinese zodiac calculator.
Full Moon calendar 2026 with names
In 2026 there will be13 full moons- one more than months, because May has two (the second one is the so-calledBlue Moon). Each full moon has a traditional name derived from agricultural and folk calendars:
| Full moon date (2026) | Traditional name | Origin of the name |
|---|---|---|
| January 3 | Wolf Moon | time of hungry wolves howling in winter |
| February 1 | Snow Moon | heaviest snowfall |
| March 3 | Worm Moon | first earthworms after the thaw |
| April 2 | Pink Moon | blooming pink phloxes (not color Moon!) |
| May 1 | Flower Moon | full spring bloom |
| May 31 | Blue Moon | second full moon in one month |
| June 29 | Strawberry Moon | strawberry picking season |
| July 29 | Deer Moon | deer antler growing season |
| August 28 | Sturgeon Moon | abundant sturgeon fishing |
| September 26 | Harvest Moon | full moon closest to the autumn equinox |
| October 26 | Hunter Moon | hunting season before winter |
| November 24 | Beaver Moon | beavers finish building dams |
| December 24 | Cold Moon | full moon on Christmas Eve - the longest nights |
The full moon officially lasts only one moment, but the dial looks "full" for 2-3 nights around this date. You can check the current phase and lighting percentage for any day in the calculator above.
Supermoon, blood moon and micro-full moon - what does it mean
The most frequently searched for "variations" of full moons are not separate phases, but a coincidence:
- Supermoon- a full moon near perigee (the closest point of the orbit). The dial appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than with a micro full moon. It is most effective just after sunrise, when the lunar illusion further magnifies it.
- Blood Moon- total lunar eclipse: the disk turns red because only light filtered by the Earth's atmosphere reaches it (same physics as a red sunset).
- Microfull- Full moon at apogee (farthest from Earth), seemingly the smallest of the year.
- Blue Moon- the second full moon in a month (in 2026 on May 31) or the fourth full moon in the season. The name has no connection with the color.
New Moon 2026 - the best nights to observe the sky
The new moon is the opposite of the full moon - the moon is practically invisible, so the sky is the darkest. It isthe best time for stargazing, the Milky Way and astrophotography, as well as for watering and sowing according to the biodynamic tradition. Approximate dates of the new moon in 2026 (UTC time, possible deviation ±1 day): January 18, February 17, March 19, April 17, May 16, June 15, July 14, August 13, September 11, October 10, November 9, December 9. Approximately 14.8 days pass between the new moon and the next full moon - then the Moon "waxes" (growing phase), and after the full moon it "wanes".
