The history of the establishment of Ash Wednesday and the ritual of sprinkling ashes
The tradition of Ash Wednesday was shaped throughout the first centuries of Christianity:
- Lent in ancient times:Initially, fasting before Easter lasted only a few days or a week. Only in the 4th century (after the Council of Nicaea) this time was extended to 40 days, referring to the 40-day fast of Jesus in the desert and the 40 years of the Israelites' journey to the Promised Land.
- Introduction of Ash Wednesday (6th-7th centuries):In order for fasting to last exactly 40 days (excluding Sundays, which are holidays and fasting is not obligatory on them), Pope Gregory the Great moved the beginning of Lent to Wednesday.
- Symbolism of ash:In 1091, Pope Urban II officially introduced the ritual of sprinkling ashes on heads as obligatory for the entire Church. The ashes used during the liturgy come from burned palm branches blessed on Palm Sunday of the previous year.

Rules of strict fasting on Ash Wednesday - what are Christians allowed to eat?
In the Catholic Church, Ash Wednesday (next to Good Friday) is the day on which the so-called strict fasting (quantitative and qualitative):
- Abstinence from meat foods (qualitative fasting):Applies to all believers who are over 14 years of age. It is forbidden to eat meat from mammals and birds and meat broths (e.g. broth). Fish, dairy products and eggs are allowed.
- Quantitative post:Valid for adults from 18 years of age until the age of 60. It allows you to eat only one full meal a day and two modest light meals.
- Spiritual dimension:In addition to culinary restrictions, Ash Wednesday calls on the faithful to reflect on the transience of human life, which is expressed in the words of the priest while pouring the ashes: "You are dust and to dust you shall return" or "Repent and believe in the Gospel."

Is Ash Wednesday a holy day of obligation (do you have to go to church)?
No, Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation in Poland, which means that the faithful do not have a canonical obligation to participate in the Holy Mass under penalty of sin. However, due to the strong religious tradition, on this day churches throughout the country are visited in large numbers by believers who want to receive ashes.
Where do the ashes used on Ash Wednesday come from?
Ash is produced by burning palm trees (willow, boxwood or palm branches) blessed in churches on Palm Sunday of the previous year. This symbolizes the cycle of liturgical life - the joy of welcoming Jesus turns into the dust of penance.
Who is not obliged to fast on December 6 and on Ash Wednesday?
Strict (quantitative) fasting does not apply to children under 18 years of age and seniors over 60 years of age. Sick people, pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as people working physically in difficult conditions, for whom restricting food could pose a health risk, are also exempt from fasting.
Can you eat sweets on Ash Wednesday?
The provisions of canon law do not explicitly prohibit eating sweets on Ash Wednesday (meat is prohibited). However, due to the penitential nature of this day, refraining from sweets, alcohol and other culinary pleasures is recommended as a form of personal mortification.
How many days does Lent last in practice?
Although the traditional name refers to 40 days, the period from Ash Wednesday to Maundy Thursday (the beginning of the Paschal Triduum) actually lasts 44 days. If we exclude 6 Sundays from this period (which are never fast days in the Christian tradition), we get exactly 38 days of fasting. Adding Good Friday and Holy Saturday - we get 40 days.
