How to Use the Fee Comparison Calculator

The calculator compares how much you keep after fees on three platforms: Etsy, eBay, and Shopify. You enter one amount — the sale price — and immediately see three results. All calculations run in your browser, so nothing is sent to a server.

With the default price of $30, the tool shows the following amounts:

Amounts are shown in US dollars ($), the platforms' currency. If you settle in another currency, enter your price and read the result in that same currency — the tool does not convert exchange rates.

How Etsy Fees Are Calculated

For Etsy, the calculator subtracts from the price a 6.5% sales commission, a 3% payment fee, a $0.25 fixed fee, and a $0.20 listing fee. In simplified form, it looks like this:

left = price × (1 − 6.5% − 3%) − $0.25 − $0.20, or price × 0.905 − $0.45.

For a price of $30, we calculate it step by step:

1. $30 × 0.905 = $27.15
2. $27.15 − $0.45 = $26.70

That is why with a $30 price, Etsy leaves $26.70 in the tool. Keep in mind that 6.5%, 3%, and the fixed amounts are approximate rates entered for comparison. Your real fees may be different, so before deciding, check Etsy's current pricing and your account terms.

How eBay Fees Are Calculated

On eBay, the calculator subtracts a 13.6% sales commission and an order fee. The formula is short:

left = price × (1 − 13.6%) − order fee, or price × 0.864 minus the order fee.

The order fee depends on the sale amount. For an order over $10, the tool assumes $0.40. For a price of $30, it looks like this:

1. $30 × 0.864 = $25.92
2. $25.92 − $0.40 = $25.52

That gives $25.52 at a $30 price. The 13.6% rate and the order fee are approximate values in the tool — on eBay, much depends on category, listing type, and country of sale, so check the platform's current pricing.

How Shopify Fees Are Calculated

For Shopify, the calculator takes into account a 2.9% payment fee and a $0.30 fixed amount per transaction. The monthly subscription is not deducted. The formula looks like this:

left = price × (1 − 2.9%) − $0.30, or price × 0.971 − $0.30.

Example for a price of $30:

1. $30 × 0.971 = $29.13
2. $29.13 − $0.30 = $28.83

The result of $28.83 is the amount after transaction fees, not your profit — it does not subtract the cost of goods, shipping, or the store subscription. The 2.9% and $0.30 rates are approximate and may vary by plan and payment method, so check Shopify's current pricing.

Limitations — What the Tool Does Not Calculate

The calculator shows only the amounts left after platform fees. It is a comparison of fees alone, not a full profit-and-loss statement. The tool does not include, among other things:

• the cost of buying or making the product,
• shipping, packaging, and return costs,
• taxes, duties, and accounting obligations,
• the Shopify monthly subscription and other fixed fees,
• spending on ads and promoting listings,
• exchange rates and currency conversions,
• individual account terms, discounts, product categories, and negotiated rates,
• changes to platform pricing and terms.

So the result is only an estimate and is best treated as a starting point for comparing the three platforms. Before you choose where to sell, compare the amount from the tool with current Etsy, eBay, and Shopify pricing and with your own accounting. Then you'll see what really remains in your situation.
