How to Use the Affiliate Commission Calculator

The affiliate commission calculator helps you work out how much you will pay partners for referrals. All calculations run in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server, so you can enter your own numbers freely.

  1. In the 'Referral revenue' field, enter the amount your referrals generated. The default is $5,000, but you can use any value.
  2. In the 'Commission %' field, set the rate you pay a partner. It starts at 10, and you can change it to your own rate.
  3. In the 'Partners' field, enter the number of people who refer your products or services. The default is 8.
  4. Read the results: 'Total commission' and 'Per partner'.

Results appear instantly as you change the values. You do not need to save anything, create an account, or send data.

How to Calculate Total Commission and Average per Partner

'Total commission' is the total amount for all partners. Calculate it like this: total commission = referral revenue × commission rate ÷ 100.

'Per partner' is the average payout for one person: per partner = total commission ÷ number of partners.

With the default values, it looks like this:

Data or resultValue
Referral revenue$5,000
Commission %10
Partners8
Total commission$500.00
Per partner$62.50

Step by step: $5,000 × 10 ÷ 100 = $500.00 in total commission, and $500.00 ÷ 8 = $62.50 per partner.

If you enter 0 in the partners field, the calculator will assume one partner so the commission can still be divided.

How to Choose a Commission Rate and Referral Revenue

The commission rate is your main decision in an affiliate program. A higher rate attracts partners, but it reduces the amount that stays with you. A lower rate improves your margin, but it may discourage people from referring.

  • Start with a realistic margin. Decide how much of a sale you can put toward commission before you ask partners to work with you.
  • Test several rates. Enter different values in the 'Commission %' field one by one and see how total commission and per-partner payout change.
  • Remember revenue. Raise referral revenue, and you will see how both payouts grow at the same rate.
  • Do not guess. It is better to calculate options in the calculator than to promise a partner a rate you cannot sustain.

It is worth saving a few scenarios and returning to them when prices, costs, or partner terms change.

Limitations: Different Partner Rates, VAT, Refunds, and Fees

The calculator describes one simplified scenario: one rate for all partners, one revenue amount, and one number of people. In practice, affiliate programs are often more complex, so the following items are not calculated in this tool.

  • Different partner rates. When each partner has different terms, the calculator's average will only be an approximation. Calculate each rate separately and add the results.
  • VAT and taxes. The tool does not add or subtract VAT, income tax, or other charges. Decide whether you are entering net or gross amounts, and stay consistent.
  • Refunds and cancellations. If a customer returns an item, the commission is usually adjusted. The calculator does not subtract refunds or failed transactions.
  • Platform and payment gateway fees. Marketplace commissions, payout costs, currency conversion, or subscriptions are not included.
  • Thresholds, limits, and settlement periods. The tool does not know about performance bonuses, minimum payouts, or billing cycles.
  • Current pricing. The rates you enter are estimates and editable. Check the current pricing for the platform you use, such as Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, Vinted, or TikTok.

Treat the result as a starting point for budget planning, not as a final settlement with partners. When terms are unusual, calculate separate scenarios and leave a margin for unexpected costs.

How to Interpret the Result and Compare It With Platform Pricing

'Total commission' tells you how much you give to partners in total from the assumed revenue. 'Per partner' shows the average payout for one person and helps you judge whether the rate is attractive to partners.

Compare it with platform pricing in a few steps:

  1. Find the commission rate in the pricing that applies to sales through a partner or in the affiliate program.
  2. Enter that rate in the calculator and see what total commission comes out to.
  3. Subtract the partner commission and your own costs from revenue, because that is what shows what stays with you.
  4. Repeat the calculation for several revenue levels to see how the result changes with sales scale.

If a reasonable amount remains after costs, the rate is probably sustainable. If not, consider a lower commission, a higher price, or different partner terms. Remember that the rates in the calculator are estimates, so check the platform's current pricing before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate affiliate commission from revenue?

Multiply referral revenue by the commission rate and divide the result by 100. With the default values, it looks like this: $5,000 × 10 ÷ 100 = $500.00 in total commission.

What is the average commission per partner?

Divide total commission by the number of partners. For $500.00 in commission and 8 partners, the result is $62.50 per person.

Does the affiliate commission calculator send my data?

No. All calculations run in your browser, and the tool does not send data to a server. You can enter your own amounts without worry.

Does the calculator account for VAT, refunds, and platform fees?

No. The tool calculates only commission from revenue, without VAT, taxes, refunds, marketplace fees, or payout costs. You need to account for those separately, preferably after checking current pricing.

What commission rate should I enter in the calculator?

The default is 10, but that is only a starting value and you can change it. Check the platform's current pricing and your own margin, then test several rates and compare the results.

Can I calculate different rates for different partners?

The calculator uses one rate for all partners. If some people have different terms, calculate the commission separately for each rate and add the resulting amounts.

Commission rates are estimates; before you settle with partners, check your affiliate platform's current rates and your own tax rules.
